Is there a tool that can save and recall several mixing setups of a project?

Hey guys!
Is there any tool that can save several mixing presets?

Here's an example of what I mean:
I have a project and it's basically mixed OK (let's call it mix "A"). Now I want to try and adjust the volume levels, eq and maybe some compression ...but i need to be sure that mix "A" is not lost and I can recall mix "A" any time I want (by pressing the button A or whatever).
The idea is to have 3-4 mixes of the same project (vocal up, vocal down, drums up,...) so I can switch between them quickly without having to load a whole new project.

...is something like that already existing?

hm, in logic you can save the channel strip and give it a special name, so you can load always the needed channel presets.... don't know anything else...

Save multiple session files. If you need to switch quickly between them, render each mix and load the renders onto separate audio tracks of a fresh session.

Saving channel strips is not the solution. Imagine you want to do some fine tuning on each instrument track ...you would need to delete every channel strip and load a new one ...for every instrument! ...and if you want to go back to the start, you do the same again.

Also saving under another session and rendering is wasting too much time for what I have in mind. Also if you want to change something in the arrangement, you'd need to change that in each of those sessions.

What I have in mind is a simple little box which collects all midi data that you need (track volume, pan, eq settings) and saves it as a preset. So you can go back to that state any time you want ...simply by clicking one button. ...not by loading a whole new session.

Easily done in Cubase. Right-click on the mixer and select "Save All Mixer Settings". Name the file "A.vmx". Then make your changes and save the new file as "B.vmx". You can easily go back and forth.

Keep in mind these .vmx files save everything except MIDI track settings.

One general way of doing this is what I do for program development of different projects - use a versioning tool?

It's kind of a backup of all parts of the project and you can revert to any earlier version as you like - even modify any of these and commit a new version.

#1. The easiest of all ways it to use "Save as" in your host.

#2. A free versioning tool that is pretty straight forward is Bazaar.

The steps needed are basically:

a) initiate versioning of a project on disk - usually a folder where most stuff are
b) add the files and filetypes that are relevant
c) commit to repository - the storage basically.
You give comments about each commit to remember what it's about.

Then you can easily restore any level of versioning from that repository to a zipfile or local folder on disk and continue working on it.

Each time to save all you do is rightclick the folder and commit and make your comment.

For a normal project I really think it's enough to save the project file from host. It contains the save of setting of all plugins and everything.


It's really setting not new recordings you are to save away.

I use Cubase too so it's easy, but surely all the main DAWs can do this? And i don't see why saving different sessions is so time consuming - you don't have to rerender anything, just save the different mixer settings, surely...?

Alright, thank you guys!
I work with ableton live and there is no such thing that I have in mind.
What I have in mind are different layers of automatization in one arrangement.
One mouse click and you switch between layers A,B,C,...without affecting the arrangement itself.

I posted it on the ableton forum ...curious about what's going to happen.

There is at least one host (name withheld as it gets a lot of mentions followed with contreversy ) that can have multiple projects open at once. In this set-up we could 'save as' any mix, then load it into a tab. We could then simply tab about between various mix states and so on and so on. No idea if Live does this, but the method could suit your needs.

The idea is NOT to open multiple instances, because you might want to change things in the arrangement.
However, that ClyphX solution sounds great to me. I'll try it out.
