no theres a black border around the edges of the notes that represent your current list selection, the colors are indication of velocity values. at least here.

i cant work like that, when i stack too many notes on the same beat in time on different keys i end up with a mess in the key editor making it hard to seperate whats what.

I don't know what's going on there. I've never seen that. I never have a mess. If I want to paste notes in at the same place, I do it... if I need to grab a lot of notes in different parts/tracks, I toggle the solo edit button if I need to and they'll paste in their right part/track. the part borders are shown as part borders (there is a preference to not show part borders, but I don't know why anyone would want that). I don't know if this auto select all under the cursor gives you that weirdness. I don't have time to test your workflow much beyond what I've done.

I do seriously detailed precision edits, often in projects that are pretty large arrangements, as a matter of course. and I have not experienced any frustration with how things work. Cubase is the granddaddy of midi editing.

starting to question if my cubase is broken or if we just have a different perspective on manageability.

can you open this 01.cpr, select midi01 part, hit Shift+f and post the screenshot...

/edit
just upgraded to 6 and they have cleaned up the interface, easier to seperate parts now, lousy thing now is i cant mute tracks from the key editor.
