weird stuff - pleasently weird
loved the sphere.
To my taste there was a bit to much mid and upperlow in the mix

Could be my speakers but the hi-end is very ringy here, should test it..
But the dreamy state is pretty cool :)

It's not your speakers, there's definitely a bit too much going on in the high end and by the end of the song I can feel a slight strain in my ears.
The piece itself is very nice, but that really need to be fixed for me to be able to enjoy it fully!

I quite like rather extreme & weird eqs but I guess I should do something about it. Should I cut the high end a bit (around wich frequencies?)? What would you suggest?
Glad you enjoy it. I like playing on the weird & unexpected side, that's why i favour rather unusual eqs, structures or sounds. The eq might be too much in the high end though.Jesse Gorter wrote:Nice chords building up some tension...

I thought about adding a beat at some point but it seemed too obvious, so I only added it in the break... and let you imagine the rest of it playing with the chords.

Fantastique! So melancholy, so full of despair, I love it. The sound is a little harsh, almost like a resonant radio, but I didn't mind it.

You should be really careful with any major EQ boosting in the top end unless you've got great monitoring. It's very easy to accidentally make part of the top end very sharp because you've got a dip in your frequency response due to monitors and/or room and such.zzz.... wrote: Cheers for the comments! much appreciated.

As for what frequencies, hard to say... I'm totally fatigued right now after listening to annode's crazy experimental "workout" piece so I'm not going to listen right now. But if you've got any major EQ boosting going on in the top end, just bring them all down 3db or so to start with and perhaps we can compare with that and see if it's suddenly just dull or if it sounds more balanced.

People speak about the high end but really thats not where the ringing happens in this piece. All the sizzles are just fine. On both my osciloscope and my visuals in winamp and a meter in fl i noticed the ringing around the 340 to 1300
thats also where ALL the frequenty activity is. Very little going on in all other areas.

To clarify my goal for this track, I'm not looking for a very polished mix. I don't mind a bit of dirt, mess and flaws (I quite like it actually, believe it or not) as long as the track is still listenable & enjoyable overall. So my question is, is this mix really hard & not enjoyable to listen or is it just that it needs a bit of tweaking to be more polished & (almost)flawless?

I checked the high end but didn't find much activity in these frequencies, & tweaking around this area didn't make much change. But I've found a lot of it around the 340-1300. I'm gonna tweak a bit around this area to see if I can improve the mix. Do you have any suggestion about where I should focus? Around the 500 hz or the 1000hz? What i usualy do is mix it down without any EQ at first
Just panning and volume. After that i do some EQing and filtering in the following way:
1. I take an instrument freqchart, perhaps this one:

2. I make sure that inaudible things are filtered out
low rumble and ultra high hiss
3. i isolate sounds - no EQ overlap.
You can use such a chart for synthesized sounds also
An e-piano can be EQed like a standard piano and synthbasses like regular basses
etcetera.... There is really nothing to it after you've seen the chart
Not sure which waveeditor youre using but most editors have frequency analyses
You can also find quite a few freeware analysers here on KVR

I'm listening again now, and ET is quite right about the frequencies, the problematic ones aren't really that high up.
In my opinion it's too harsh. A mix can be rough, but it shouldn't be overly harsh unless your goal is to actually make people feel bad physically (there's music like that). Unless that's the goal though, in my opinion, it isn't a matter of taste but poor mixing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're a bad mixer, I'd say it's very likely an effect of the monitoring and/or listening environment since these are frequencies anyone with normal hearing should be able to perceive well.
