OK, hear(PUN,HA)is the deal, I'm starting to do more pet sitting(yes, for a price, I'll sit on yous pet) and I have to have texting, I've avoided this as long as I can. But I need texting, SO! since I 'm going for a "smart" phone, which would be better, Iphone or Android for music apps?
Also, any good graphics editors available for iether?
And, do iphone apps work on Android OS and vise versa?

Thanks guys :)

Post

Depends what apps you want. Both have thier advantages but neither is perfect. iphone for more choice of standalone audio apps, Android for flexibilty - you can get Android phones with built in little physical QWERTY keyboards. A cut down version of Photoshop is on Android. Youve opened a mine field :-)

TBH - the small screen size on phones means that you wont get serious stuff done but its all good fun. Iphone apps wont work on Android and vice versa. Texting on touch screen can be fiddly/frustrating - YMMV.

There are music apps on both. It pretty well boils down to what you want to pay; As usual, you pay double for anything with Apple and an "i" in front of its name. I don't think anyone's released a mobile in the past 5 years that doesn't do texting? I'm still a bit of a Luddite as far as mobiles go, but I finally bought some fancy Android smart phone - Android's pretty straight forward, have to say - has to be for me to use it. Also, it has loads of shite that I will never ever use on it. But so do iPhones, I'm sure. I can photograph my testicles and post it to Twatter in one easy click! Great! :hyper:

No fuckin idea why I need to do that, but it seems to be a necessity these days...

If you want to do any music on your phone, just get an iPhone.

There is an endless supply of music apps.

Most are mostly toys, but fun toys.

Loopy is amazing though.

I've also used iApps in quite a few tracks.

Iphone - its not more expensive than equivelent android phones - sure there are budget android phones just as their are in the tablet world but when you use them u will understand why they are cheaper (as opposed to 'more competetively priced').

Texting isnt pushing a phone these days tho, so u aint gotta go mad if thats all u want. I probably thrown phones away that you could have used!!!!
No, that Glitch is meant to be there.....

for music apps, imo there is no other choice than an iPhone.

Has to do with low latency audio processing and Android doesn't really do that. Therefore there aren't all that many relevant music production apps for it, compared to the ones that are available for iOS.

There is a specialised forum here at kvr for mobile devices, maybe having a look there can help your decision.

Yes, all apps work on all smartphones. I tend to buy Nokia apps because they're cheap and then run them on my iPhone 4S. I also like running Windows VSTs in Logic on my iPhone. Logic is OSX but it's an app as well so it runs on anything.

That's what I love about this software business, everything is so compatible and all software and hardware developers use the exact same standards.

My point of view, which is someone who works for a game developer is that the iPhone is the way to go. People think Android is great because it's so open, but from our standpoint it just means a cut down version of the game because we have no idea what features your phone might have. I'm an artist so it's no skin off my apple (pun intended) but I hear the gripes of the engineers and I've worked on more than one project where the publisher just said, "Screw it" for the Android version. I also read somewhere that a huge percentage of apps available for Android are malware. iPhone? Probably next to none because of Apple's standards. Some might see this as a choke hold, but as a user it just means my phone works as well as it did the day I got it.

So... I've had an iPhone since day 1. The interface was great and got better. I've had every other version and the current addition of Siri is awesome. I'm constantly talking to her when I'm lonely :hihi: or when I need to text someone or set up a reminder. I even use AT&T and my service is good. It got crappy for a little while but they must have fixed things in my area. (San Francisco East Bay) The app selection is awesome. It's a great media player.

So... I'm sure there are good phones that run Android... but the ones I've seen seem cheap to me. Plastic. A coworker's Sony phone screen got so scratched up in his pocket it looked like crap in a week and he claimed he didn't even have keys or anything in his pocket. The iPhones Gorilla Glass is tough as nails. He also spent a long time trying to figure out how to sync his music. If you already use iTunes you don't even have to think about it on an iPhone. Anyway, call me a fanboi, but this thing is one of my favorite devices and I've had quite a few in my day.

My Droid X feels good and solid and the display cover is of Gorilla Glass. Not a visible scratch on it. IIRC the other Droid models have it too.

What Droids don't have is low latency for music, at least not the OS version I have. To me that matters not, as I didn't get it to run music software on.

Gorilla glass is used on many phones etc :

The argument for games is a poor one. You could try that out on PC - many different hardware platforms but it dont stop the games being made. IOS isnt a proper OS, its locked down and as for itunes - it locks you in to one way of doing things - via a PC. Ive had texts from people saying sorry, my iphone just crashed. Malware - Apple are where Microsoft were 10 years ago, denying its a problem. Youll have it but youll never know as theres little to tell you. As I said, nothing is perfect :-)

So you don't technically need a smart phone. If you're stuck on smart phones, though, best for texting is Blackberry.
abstractcats wrote:since I 'm going for a "smart" phone, which would be better, Iphone or Android for music apps?
iPhone, although IMO the best a smart phone music app can aspire to is the equivalent of early Fruity Loops. (And Image-Line have a music app for iPhone.)
abstractcats wrote:Also, any good graphics editors available for iether?
There's Photoshop on Android, but I can't say it's good. Like music apps, the interface just doesn't lend itself to anything very advanced.
abstractcats wrote:And, do iphone apps work on Android OS and vise versa?
Definitely not. Completely different OS. However, some developers do develop their apps for both.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

I have an HTC Android phone. It is brilliant. I run Caustic Audio Rack on it. Caustic is a wonderful Reason styled app. All sequencing, so latency isn't an issue.

But if I were very serious about wanting to make some tunes on my phone, I would go with the iphone, for the choices and low latency.

As far as graphics apps for Android (painting, drawing, layers, etc.), Sketchbook Mobile is very good. Really. Very very good. I haven't searched but I'm certain there must be a similar quality photo editor for Android as well.

I don't know about graphics apps for iphone, I am sure there are plenty.

Blackberry's are a matter of taste, love or hate thing. The company is struggling now though, so do your homework.

Smart phones are so cool. Have fun.
