Rewire alternative?

Can anyone suggest an app, which functions like Rewire, to connect Ableton to Reaper (Reaper as slave)? I'd like to sequence in Ableton and use Reaper for the fx. With Rewire, I'm only able to use the native instruments which come with Ableton. I'd like to be able to use third party vsti's as well.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Try Wormhole2.
http://code.google.com/p/wormhole2/
Dunno if it works on the same machine or only in a network.
You'll have to read the manual.

I've never used it on the same computer between two DAWS, only between 2 computers over LAN, but i read somewhere it works...dcfac73 wrote:I'm trying Wormhole. Haven't got it to work yet.

Rearoute, comes with Reaper, just tell Ableton to use it as its ASIO driver, now all audio will be coming out of Reaper including Ableton, use a MIDI loopback driver to send MIDI from Ableton to Reaper

The OP asked for:
Ableton [Events] -> Reaper
Is there a need for
Reaper [Audio] -> Ableton?
If not, then why bother with the extra complication of ReaRoute? Just bung a virtual midi connection from Ableton to Reaper and be done?

I've tried a few different things (rearoute, wormhole, jack, virtual audio cable)without much success. I'm not the most techiest of heads, which doesn't help, but I'm having trouble with running audio and vsti's from Ableton into Reaper. There seem to be 2 problems- 1. Rewire seems to kick in automatically, and I don't know how to disable it, 2. Cockos' wiki says that, in order to use Reaper as a reroute master, it needs to be opened before Ableton. When I try this, Ableton just assumes I want to use it in Rewire mode.
My other option is to use Rewire and only run Vst's in Reaper.
Thanks for all the responses anyways. I'll keep trying.

You can disable Reaper acting as a Rewire mixer in Preferences->Plugins->Rewire by unchecking the first box.dcfac73 wrote:1. Rewire seems to kick in automatically, and I don't know how to disable it,
You'd probably want to sync the two up as well, you'll need some form of virtual MIDI ports for this - I like loopMIDI these days.

Just curious, but why aren't you able to send MIDI sequences from Ableton to Reaper?dcfac73 wrote:I'd like to sequence in Ableton and use Reaper for the fx. With Rewire, I'm only able to use the native instruments which come with Ableton. I'd like to be able to use third party vsti's as well.
I use Reason rewired into Reaper all the time, and you can send MIDI data from Reaper into Reason, and Reason audio back into Reaper. Are you not able to do this with Ableton?

I would say that you can do this, but I want to use 3rd party vsti's in Ableton and send the audio to Reaper, where I want to use 3rd party fx to process and monitor audio. When I use Rewire with Ableton I'm only able to use the Ableton plugins.5.1 wrote:Just curious, but why aren't you able to send MIDI sequences from Ableton to Reaper?dcfac73 wrote:I'd like to sequence in Ableton and use Reaper for the fx. It's possible to Rewire a slave to Live, use the intruments in Live, third-party VSTs and instruments in the Rewire slave.dcfac73 wrote:I'd like to sequence in Ableton and use Reaper for the fx. I've done it before and I often Rewire Reason or eXT to Live as slave. Not sure if I'm reading it right and if you're maybe just not setting up Rewire right.
