I think the complaints are against the layout. I forget who said this in a recent Reaper thread here, but he/she basically said something along the lines of "you can put a dress on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Edit: for the record, before you Reaper fanboys start picking up your pitchforks, I am a Reaper user.

I suspect that some of the complaints are about neither the layout nor the themes, but about the things that cannot be themed (such as dialogs and menus) and part of this is more of a "user experience" concern than one of visual appeal. Personally, the more utilitarian a design is, the more I like it, so I have few UI issues with REAPER.

Is there an audio engine that isn't well beyond the threshold of human perception? (That alone might make it interesting!)

Ideally for me, a DAW would need no PC interface at all. What I mean is, once it's configured and trimmed for your workflow, you should be able to operate it with a shuttle control and faders, not with a mouse, keyboard, and video monitor at all. Or for a synth player, it should simply be usable as a headless rackmounted instrument.

The ideal GUI is *totally optional*.

I also happen to believe that overlooked tools like ECASound are far more powerful than their (complete lack of) GUI would imply. (That said, I still prefer REAPER over anything else I've used, with FLStudio -- after some configuration -- coming in a close second.)

I'm sorry, did you mistake my post amoung some other non serious posts to be taken seriously? Or are you just trying to start a debate on sound engines?
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

For one thing, I think people don't like how the reap started out.
It started out as a direct threat to specific brands, and this value is even embodied in its name. Some people who don't even have a vested interest in REAPER's targets had some sort of instinctive urge to see REAPER as a threat and defend against it. At least some of the criticism that has been levied against it has been from people who haven't actually used it. I'm sure this makes Justin smile.
