Specifically a laptop. I am particularly interested in a good Moog-like synth. Memory is limited to 2gb, and disk space is not abaundant. I am not interested so much in large sample libraries, for instance.

They ask for a donation, so it is free in a way, I think there might be a nag screen.

I have Minimogue but just saw there are higher-quality versions available:

MinimogueLUXUS version 2.3 8 times oversampled

I'm going to try that one on my desktop :)

Steinberg released Model E for free, I should think that would do ok on an underpowered system, considering its age.
Fugue State Audio - plugins, samples, etc.
Support the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers

I just tested Model-E and it seems it is heavier weight and not as nice as Minimogue. So far that seems like the king.

add sq80L, and oatmeal

With these 3 synths you can do alot.

- model e , sry but is just bad, cant compete with any top notch freesynth.

The OP didnt said what cpu he got, thats more crucial than ram.

Yeah Synth1 is there already :) SQ8L is a great suggestion, I have it on my desktop already, and I'll check out Oatmeal. Thanks!

You could try running these plugins through an oversampler too. I haven't tried in a long time (and am a Mac user now) but recall Synth1 and possibly Oatmeal benefited from it.

Oatmeal sounds great, but it is probably too heavy for what I was wanting on that laptop. Are there some links to good patches for it?
