I COULD say that a TRUE artist is an aesthete that demands form and not just function from this tools.
But I know that people are different and have varying needs, so I would know it to be complete BS.

As a musician, I have an overriding desire to minimize the number of things that I need to touch or even look at while playing. So the very existence of a GUI is an imposition. Some GUI might be useful and necessary to get you to the point of configuration where it's possible to operate with the UI turned off, but beyond that, it's in the way.

as someone that's made loop points to get sustain on samples on a thumb-sized display (that is if you're not a very large human), describing these points in hexademimal system with no GUI at all, I would say that a GUI is a good thing and the less grating it is to look at the better. are you that easily distracted that the GUI is an imposition when you are playing? I mean if that's an issue simply use hot keys and turn off your monitor. personally as a musician I rarely look at my monitor or even face it because I'm playing and my critical mind is shut off. My eyes may be closed some of the time, I may be looking at my neck at others and then there are the times (maybe the most common) where I'm just kind of letting my eyes drift off into space because I am not playing with my eyes. (I could see someone who is reading music needing to also play with their eyes but I can't sight read) So this makes no sense to me, sorry.

As I am fortunate not to have the need or desire to have an engineer running my recording gear the engineer in me is very thankful I can see what I'm doing. I'm assuming by your words that a mixing board, an amp, fx, your synths require a lot of things to touch (and a lot more to plug in than me) or look at while you are playing must be a distraction as well.

As a musician I prefer to get the most out of my playing experience as possible, someone banging on my door is a distraction, the phone ringing is a distraction but seeing gear? Not a chance and TBH it actually inspires me whether it be a computer, my amps and their glow, my guitars, lights and I just can't imagine being distracted by that.

edit: I might add tha music itself takes me away to 'there' which is where I am when I am playing, so much so that over 10 years ago I had to give up driving and listening to music because music by default became a distraction even when I'm not playing and takes me to the opposite place I should be in while driving.

Everyone is different. Took me a long time to figure out it's "the one". Someone doesn't like it, mptt, that's why it's nice there are so many choices.

I'm new to Reaper and found it easy to work with, I am certainly not the deepest user but for me coming from Live 5 it is easy enough, and does everything I need pretty easily. I looked into the manual a couple of times, but for the most part it is easy to figure out. That said, I'm not really well versed on the competition nor do i use it to the depths most here probably do.

Hmmmm. Just tried it and it looks nothing like the photo.

EDIT: Seems to show a "classic" theme with black. Must investigate......

This version is also nice but the photo is not very accurate. Best to try it.
