I'll mention it because i doubt anyone else will. It's called tongue drum and is an app of one of those african wooden boxes with slits cut in the top. Any way it has a few different sounds/mallets and also a nice analog synth sound thrown in.! I do some music workshops and often plug it in for a bit of a rhythm warmup with the guys, just a simple fun and nice thing really. I gave up on trying to sequence on my iphone - too fiddly, just like the 'hit the screen make a sound' type apps now. Thumb jam is nice and pro loop.. Hmm there's lots of recent ones i didn't get to try, my iphone 3gs got stuck at ios 3.1 and wouldn't update.. Contract is out this week and i can get an iphone 4.5.. Wondering when 5 might be out ( late this year maybe?) so not sure if i should hold out

In no particular order:
Beatmaker2: For me, it killed Nanostudio since the virtual midi and background audio Update. The Chop Lab is almost a unique fonction in the Music App universe (almost, look at Beat Twirl)
Meteor: Just need Virtual Midi to become the best DAW on iPad.
Beat Twirl: Already tried Recycle on the Computer? Beat Twirl is all about that: slicing and rearanging beats and loops. Awesome!!!
ThumbJam: The guy behind ThumJam (Jesse) must be a genious. It is the most playable, useful, fun, great sounding, versatile, open (choose an adjectiv and put it in the list) ios instrument. It has everything you wish for an iOS App, Full MIDI, AudioCopy/Paste, Wi-Fi transfer, and, and, and...A true wonder!!!!
Music Studio: It is worth the money just for the amazing piano roll editor. they all should be this way.
MIDIBridge: Connect all your Core MIDI compatible APP together, very simple to use. Very useful.
StepPolyArp: THE Arp.
Sunrizer: Great sounding synth with Virtual MIDI. Do what it says and do it very well.
Arctic Key: Another very good soundinh sound with Virtual MIDI
iFile: Not a Music App and your iDevice must be jailbreaked in order to use it but it became so important in my workflow that I had to mention it.
With iFile I'm able to exchange whatever files between Apps without having to connect to a computer and launch iTunes. Impossible with a stock iOS.

1) NanoStudio: Everything I write and record starts and/or ends up here. Simply amazing in all it can do, rock solid (never crashes or hangs) and fantastic workflow.
2) Sunrizer / XS: My Favorite VA synth on the iOS. Huge sound and easy to program.
3) ThumbJam: My favorite "real instrument" app. Great for getting down ideas or bringing samples / phrases into NanoStudio.
4) Funkbox: Don't know why, but I find working in this Drum Machine app to be hugely inspiring for playing jams in other iOS apps. Background audio, ACP and MidiExport are all a big plus.
5) Garageband: Doesn't "play nice" with others, but for $4.99, you can't find better performance sounds for Grand Piano, EP and Organ.
6) MidiBridge: Suddenly made my Akai Synthstation useful again by allowing me to use all my Core MIDI iOS apps with it.
7) SampleWiz: Comes with some great sounds, and makes it really easy to manipulate samples.
8 ) MultriTrack Daw: It's a DAW! Multitrack simultaneous recording + editing & effects, background audio and ACP.
9) Alchemy: Great inspiring sounds. Lots of fun to play around with.
10) Nlog Synth / Animoog / Argon / Addicitve Synth: All good synths, but I haven't put nearly enough time into them given the quality and usability of the others listed above.

1) Geo Synthesizer - the best controller I've found. It has some nice built in sounds, and interfaces well with SampleWiz, but is often overlooked as a straight up midi controller. It's simple, expressive, and for some strange reason a bit overlooked.
2) Samplewiz - great for creating new sounds, and as capable (if not more) than most samplers on a PC.
3) Thumbjam - lots of great sounds, tons of scales to play in, built-in looping, virtual midi, background audio, and it gets better with every update.
4) Animoog - wish the controls were a bit better for this, but the sounds are one of a kind. Easily worth $30, but I got it for the .99 introductory price. Easily the best deal I've ever gotten for a synth.
5) Ampkit+ - my choice for Guitar and effects modelling. Has an amp that mimics the Fender Acoustasonic, which is great for Acoustic guitar sounds.
6) Mixtikl - another often overlooked app. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but can make some nice atmospheric drones with a minimal amount of work. The more I learn about this app, the more I love it.
7) TouchOSC - use this for building interfaces for my synths and sound libraries on the PC. It's the poor man's Lemur, but is very very capable.
BeatMaker 2 - multi-tracker with the ability to create your own sound sets.
9) MidiBridge - great for passing along midi information to programs that don't support Virtual Midi
10) Sampletank - lots of good sounds. I use Geo Synthesizer to control Sampletank via Midi Bridge and get some great results. As a standalone, I don't know how playable it is without having external hardware. Hope they integrate Virtual Midi at some point, but MidiBridge gets the job done for now.

We should have a thread of iOS music apps that gave us the greatest letdown.
