Paul's Stretch is one of my faves.
My latest might give a good idea of what is possible.

Also, http://xenakios.wordpress.com/ is great for many things.
http://www.densitygs.com/ Not free but cheap, if you buy both its cheaper.

Feedback loops can be very interesting for this kind of stuff too! Live allows feedback loops iirc (Cubase doesn't
).
Send your track to a delay and send the delay to a distortion and the distortion back to the delay for example. Throw in some reverbs, flangers, filters, whatever in there and you can get amazing results.
And don't forget to automate the send levels!
Cheers
Dennis

Okay I realize the freeze function in reverbs... But what use exactly does it have? It kind of just holds the image that it was creating, correct? I'm sorry with the simple questions. I really want to start branching out from what workflows I've been used to for so long...

Drones? Look no further than PhotoSounder.... awesome...
The first track on Stay for a Moment (click link below) starts with a drone that's actually a (very) cheesy "Oh Yeah" R&B-ish sample from the Korg Triton, run through Photosounder. Just to give you an example. It will do seriously interesting things to whatever you throw at it.
Best,
Anders

Okay I checked out the photosounder stuff... I'm not sure if I want that. You see, I want to be able to guide the drone. I want control. A lot of ambient stuff often feels directionless to me. Generative drone stuff is neat, but I hope you guys get what I'm saying. Most of my experimentations end up just being washes of reverb, and although that's cool, I think I want to branch out beyond that in interesting ways. I'm listening to Lovesliescrushing and I know they use tape tricks and stuff like that but I'm astonished at what can be done with each track... I'm seeking vst equivalents to things like this. Thanks!

As already mentioned, if it's for real time with instruments then you need effect pedals like freeze, loopers, reverbs & delays, not a synth.

please forgive my eccentricities
okay so what exactly is a freeze pedal, vst-wise? Is this the freeze button on a reverb?
looks like I'll have to really try to set up my fcb1010... Been putting that off for a long long time.
Thanks!
