processor heating up..?

I started getting these warning beeps from the cabnit and figured that it cud be an overheating alert (had happened once long back). I installed the PCalert utility that came with the MSI mobo... it showed the processor temp to be 60-62 degrees centigrade. System temp was much lower...

i've heard from reliably sources that anything 60C can damage a CPU..

The first thing I would do is to un-overclock it. Are you using the stock heatsink? Those are total crap, I would not think of overclocking with the stock heatsink on there.

MSI released new BIOSes a few month ago and also updated their mobo drivers which now implement Intel updated microcodes for the cpu. Installing both will help reducing the temps of your system (its reading AND its real temperatures).
You should install the update utility on the mobo's cd and run it to find out what, where and how to update.

Some cases cannot adequately vent the heat. Mine can't so I have to leave the side off.
One thing that could help. Get one of those cans of compressed air and clear any dusty vents. Check the vent for your CPU (if there is one), the back of the computer case, your power supply, and the heat sink for your processor.

Last night it touched 70!
ive clocked it to it's default. the strange thing is that it was running ok at the OC'd clok speed for the past 6months. Maybe it's cause summers have come in.. but im running the machine in a cool environment. Tonight ill chek the fans and all...i am using the stock Heat sink... we dont get others here. Ive also removed the side cover of the casing. Will get back tommorow.

Please check the heat sink too. Maybe it's not decent connected anymore. When your processor reaches 70 degrees, touch the heat sink to feel if the heat sink is hot. If it isn't THAT hot, then the heat sink might not be connected well. Or, the temperature calculation is f**ked up. This happened a lot with MSI boards in the past.
Also make sure the case's airflow is well done.
By the way, the maximum possible temperature for an Athlon XP Barton is 85 degrees I believe. Anyway, your computer will crash far before the processor gets to 85 degrees. Around 70 degrees you should already have some crashes...

Oh it's an AMD cpu, I had not seen that so sorry about my mentioning of an Intel. Anyway you should really check the updates if not done (bios+mobo drivers), f.e. I had the same prob and the cpu temp lost 20°c after the update. Apparently they corrected the temp reading scale (bios) and implemented intsructions (mobo driver) for the cpu to cut off the power supply on its unused parts when not needed (a sort of built in cpuidle). It has no impact on the performances but does a lot for the heat decreasing. I don't know if it's effective for AMD too but I see no reason why it wouldn't be.
I don't know exactly for bartons, but seeing these days that the p4s tend to overheat as well, and on the basis of overclocking experiments I made, I'd say you should be able at least to run it idle at 40°c and full load below 50°c without any special heatsink, even in summer time. Any higher value may cause crashes of course but will also reduce a lot the cpu lifetime.

I could fry an egg on my AMD’s
AMD’s are hot – they run hot and anything below 70 under load is fine imo. I got myself a new heatsink and fan (silver mountain) and that seems to keep things to a sensible limit (around 58-60)

You should NEVER RUN THE COMUTER WITHOUT THE CASING!
It acts as a fridge and cools the mobo and other components...Removing the side only makes it worse!
Clean any wents and fans, or maybe get new fans and heatsinks.

To add to what mahntra said. When the sides of the cases are attached, proper use of case fans creates an airflow current and a slight air pressure increase inside the case, preventing dust from collecting(as much) on the parts. Removing the side panel will prevent this from happening. Ideally, you should have 2-3 case fans. In my setup, I run 2 in front and 1 in back. The back fan blows out hot air that comes off the CPUs heatsink, and the front 2 fans cool draw air in.
Further, I would recommend that you break down your PC and vacuum all of the parts down at least once per year(if not more). I have to do this every 3-4 months, since I have pets, and Houston is full of pollen and dust.

at 2G that temp is very normal
my xp3200 gets up to 70c when my room is sealed and a project taking up to 80%CPU load constantly (no airflow into the room)
when open the door of my room, temp will go down up to 5c sometimes
when letting the case open, CPU temp will never get over 55c at 100% load

zelman a7000 cpu heatsink at 1850RPM
a radeon 9800pro with zelman heatsink and fan(at 1400RPM)
uad-1 ... hot
audigy2zs ... ok
pulsar2 ... ok
tc powercore ok
2 ATA100 HDs.... ok
For some reason my whole computer (especilly the zelman 400w power) gets really hot when doing music projects, but when playing games are alright~
i think need a better powersupply.
............. believe me.... theres aint much airflow going in and out but
"Noise" is my first consideration
