processor heating up..?

I've gone to great lengths to create a quiet computer. However, when I recently ugpraded my MOBO and CPU to a P4 3.0ghz, the temps were now out-of-control. I added 2 case fans (with great consternation, I might add!) an 80mm Papst with speed control, I replaced the cooler with a Zalman Flower cooler.

The CPU and MB temps were still way too high. Even with the fans on HIGH. Was noisey as hell too.

How ironic then, when I pulled the side cover off and disabled the fans(except the CPU fan, which I turned all the way down, but not off) that the whole system ran cool and quiet.

I bugs the Sh*t out of me to leave the side off but so be it.

You could get a liquid gas cooling system.
Then you´d never have to remove the side
Temp as low as -25C. Some real OC experiments can be done with a case like that.

For some reason my whole computer (especilly the zelman 400w power) gets really hot when doing music projects, but when playing games are alright~

i think need a better powersupply.

Not sure... Zalman power supplies have a very good name and went very well through tests...

One thing you might try is taking off the heatsink and lapping it with some ultrafine sandpaper on a flat block. My stock AMD cooler had a really rough machine job on the heatsink. The smoother you get it the more efficiently it will cool. Then clean the heatsink and CPU die realy well with some rubbing alcohol and re-attatch it using some good thermal paste.

I've been busy as hell the past few daz.. it's a sunday and im at work

Anywaz... this machine is running at 50+ degrees cent. at idle (just a few minutes after boot, no application open)... though it does occasionally touch bout 48-49. All my fans are working. One case fan and one on the heat sink. I tries touching the heat sink, was expecting it to be hot. But it was more warm. Ill try again with applications running.
The heat sink and the fan on top seem fixed proper.
I have downloaded the latest BIOS and will try flashing it tonight.

also any other utility that i cud perhaps use to check the temperature??

A lot of the AMD overclockers on the Nforce forum are using Motherboard Monitor to watch their CPU temps, maybe give it a go and see how it compares with your current temperature monitor.

I had a similar problem last summer but whatever you do don't run it without a fan.
Replace the fan immediately! I ran mine with a bad fan and I burnt my whole motherboard up. It too was an AMD so I would highly recommend you GET a new fan NOw.

There are people who know a whole lot more about computers here than I do but I can only share with you my personal experience.

Motherboard Monitor. It will allow you to compare the external and the internal sensor. Don't ask me how... I use MBM, but my mobo doesn't support the internal sensor well.

Can be anything, do your projects use a lot of CPU power? If so, the graphical response may be lower... But that's completely normal.

That the processor doesn't make good contact with the heatsink. This can be causes by several things:

- Bad thermal compound used. For example, the standard "chewing gun" compound some cooler manufacturers are using is quite bad. Also when using normal thermal compound, don't use a too thick film of that stuff.
- The back of the heatsink is pretty raw. Like said before, take a very fine-grained sandpaper and make it shining.
- The heatsink isn't holded tight to the processor core. Check the clip of the heatsink you're using.

I´ve been reading this thread and decided to take the test myself using motherboard monitor, despite the fact that I never experience any problems with my computer of a kind that could be related to an overheated system.
I´m the owner of an AMD 1800+ XP, which reaches 74-76 (Celsius), I found out! Sounds a bit dramatic compared to what is being told in this thread, but as I said - it never gave me problems, and I´ve had this CPU for almost 2 years now.
Well, anyway. I won´t consider either changing the fan nor adding thermal paste, cause unlike in the good old days, mounting and unmounting fans have, at least for me, become a nightmare. I actually broke both the mobo, fan and cpu when I first came home with them back then, but at least I managed to get another CPU for free
But.. could like a small cleanup in the computer, rearranging of cables and blowing dust of the fan etc. maybe decrease the temperature to a desired level?

Giving the maximum temperatures. Seems like 80-90C is the max. Mine never gets above 50C! ;perhaps I should turn on me heating...
