Are you able to identify them specifically (specific ensembles, presets) in specific parts/songs?
SoundSonicTeam wrote: So i guess you use Spacedrone and metaphysical function?
i've never used either of those, actually. i think they're really cool, and i want to use them, but so far i don't know how (where to put the sounds in my tracks). They're probably best for ambient backdrops like i have in some of my tracks. Metaphysical function is awesome but the snapshots are far too characteristic of the tool for me to just use one of them outright (i just found out that the ambient sounds in the game Weird Worlds come straight from Metaphysical Function presets) and i cannot for the life of me program that thing. i've tried. i accomplish nothing because i can't figure out what set of controls makes what part of the sound, nor do i have any hope of starting from scratch.

The ambient sounds you hear in my tracks are almost exclusively feedback loops made with a Peavey TransTubeFex guitar effects processor. Great fun, those experiments; MUST do more of that. i've also used Sound Forge's Acoustic Mirror (convolution tool) as a special effects processor (not as reverb).
SoundSonicTeam wrote:that sort of dark ambient thing would work pretty well for you huh?
i do like the dark ambient thing, but i'm more aligned with the Nine Inch Nails format(s), my favorites being 'the fragile' and 'Ghosts I-IV'. i've primarily done soundtrack format, probably because i grew up inspired by stuff like synthy 80s Doctor Who and film scores, but i'm interested in (and mostly listen to) the traditional pop structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, etc. Most importantly, i need to write more vocals, but i suck at that. i can sing well enough but writing words to music is a huge problem for me. Which sucks because i love singing. It's one of my primary enjoyment factors in listening to music.

I've done a comparison myself back to back with a real roland 303(a well known acid techno artist bought it round mine), the square wave was extremely close and hard(impossible) to tell apart, the saw wave was way-off, didn't have that squelch like the real one...

I just went to your website and noticed you're selling the Adventus DF VST synth.
I thought it was discontinued. The website is still up and the developer has a price of $60.00. Your price is roughly 20 pounds (sorry I don't have a pound symbol), which is $32.00.
Is this a special?

Hi! No it's still going strong!! Great instrument. Gino, the creator from Softplug has been a gent by allowing us to run the Adventus at a steal until the end of February as part of our introductory sale. Obviously biased, but it's reeeeeally is good. It's often pitched as a tool for techno and trance, but it's pretty versitle, I love it.

Hey! Really, that's interesting, heard the same on the lower frequencies, but packs a punch right?? Ah, 303 heaven, it's a glorious place. I suppose for the price they're forgiven. You into your drum machines? Much hardware on board?

I'm a bit funny with vocals, as a listener it's more tonal than lyrical content for me. Always been the same. The extra dimension it can give is artistically relevant and moving but vocals as a tonal instrument can be just as moving. If anything try hard lyrics can be spotted a mile away, I would say don't let it see it as problem, but it's never going to be easy!

Mostly ITB, apart from that an Ultranova, Miniak, Plugiator and a Yamaha DX-21. The only thing I'm missing is a real Analogue synth, I do love the sound of the old school gear though(808's etc), just not the appetite to own the old school stuff at the price/maintenance. Plus I prefer the VST way of working, every hardware synth I use also has a VST.

After playing on a real 303, I'm happy enough with the cheaper D16 Vst version, I wouldn't lay down a grand for the original when I could get a fully fledged modern analogue synth for that same price(i.e. Dave Smith Prophet 08).

My friend is at the minute deeply sampling his 303 for use with software samplers, I'm trying to get him to make a bank for Alchemy maybe, he's considering buying it...

Yeah, hands on classics has to be experienced but got to live within your means, end of the day you want the sound and want to make music with it, what can you do!

Sampling a 303, you got to be so precise and methodic with that, quite a task to get tight. Quite satisfying though! I know a few with sample, I love it but I think my patients wane to quickly! Is he close to completing?

Voted other. The poll almost completely missed all my top choices. Out of all the plugin manufacturers whose products I use, only NI and D16 were mentioned. I like them both, of course, but out of the ones that weren't mentioned at all, here are the ones I rely on regularly: U-He, Camel Audio, Spectrasonics, Fabfilter, Voxengo, Cytomic, Arts Acoustic and Xfer Records (Nerve).

Very hard to pick just one above all others, so I'll just leave this here as is :)

Edit: oh yeah, the other part of the question: why? Sound quality, functionality, usability, inspiration -- and very good support experiences with pretty much every one of these. These are the tools I personally gel with, and feel like I can really count on them.

Exactly my thought as well. Voted 'other'.

Why on earth are major players like Voxengo, Waves and FabFilter not mentioned?? And U-he!?!!?? His synths are all over BLOCKBUSTER Hollywood movies for crying out loud!! .. and Camel Audio.

It's especially weird considering some very small players in the plugin business like G-Sonique and Softplug (I had never even heard of softplug before!). :?

EDIT: aah I see now.. you listed companies who's products you sell. Ok, fair enough. The title of the topic is a bit misleading though.

Cheers!
