Recording on iPhone/iPad?

I've never recorded anything with my iPhone 4 or iPad 2, but quite fancy it. What do you use for an audio input? I know nothing about this. What can get you (cheap as possible please!) that gives the iPhone/iPad a line in?

We have a whole line of products for recording into your iOS device. From iRig to iRig Mic we even have some cool stuff coming out this year like iRig PRE which lets you use your own pro audio microphone with your iPhone and iRig STOMP which lets you use your iPhone with your normal guitar pedal set up!

Both are very good suggestions above.
I'll also add that if you get the Apple Camera Connection Kit for about £25, you get a little block that basically gives you a USB port to connect USB devices.
This then opens up a whole world of devices to choose from which you may already own. A search on the net will throw up a list of known working devices and you could go from there.
I had an old M-Audio Uno midi-interface lying around which now connects my iPad to my DAW and with Lemur, its added an awesome controller to complement my automap setup. The CCK gives a level of flexibility too as I can swap the device connected via usb and record stuff if I needed to.
It does have some disadvantages tho :-
1. No power charging at the same time as using it - some devices such as the Alesis dock will allow you to charge the iPad as your using the dock - handy if you want to record for hours.
2. Its not particularly 'neat' as a solution - the usb cable basically sticks out like a phantom boner and could get knocked pretty easily imo.
3. Extra stuff to lug about - the solutions listed above are more portable than the CCK & small interface.
Just another option to explore, hope it helps.

If you want a solution for iPad AND iPhone and a stereo line in there isn't much choice, afaik only line 6 mobile in is available now : http://line6.com/mobilein/.

You're really better off with something that goes through the dock connector. Stuff going through the headphone jack has crosstalk issues, and doesn't sound nearly as good.
I use the Apogee JAM for guitar stuff, and have used USB audio interfaces through the CCK on the iPad. However I'm definitely geeked about the the new Tascam iU2, which should be out soon.
The Line 6 MobileIn looks decent too, and you could definitely run a preamp or mixer into its Line In.
