The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I swear the Monkees were the main reason I got into music. It's a sad day. My dad made me join little league baseball and it conflicted with the show so I had my younger brother put a table top cassette deck on the TV and record the audio so I could listen to it later. Now there's only one Davy Jones.

my sister had such a crush on him as did most young girls in the 60s, I remember that episode of The Brady Bunch well...of course that was what Friday night was for us as kids. I too joined little league but not because of my father, back then many young boys had dreams of being a pro ball player and I was no different. But I was like the kid on an old Lifesaver ad where the kid strikes out to end the game and the father gives him a Lifesaver. My coach tried me as a catcher and every time the pitcher threw the ball I ducked  (keep in mind I was a very small kid, I broke 100lbs my freshman year of high school and I'm still only 5'5" tall)

I can't say whether or not the Monkees really influenced me because they were out of style by the time I was 12 within my peer group (would have been 1971) and when I got my first guitar. Honestly because at the time we knew the Monkees were just a show and I think that actually steered me away from even the Beetles and pushed me more toward the Stones (I do remember watching the Beetles on Ed Sullivan, but I think my parents would not let us see the Stones back then).

The timing of my failing at baseball and failing at trumpet had more to do with my passion for guitar I think though. My earliest memories revolve around music and my wanting to be a musician/composer (yes I remember going to see the Sound of Music as a small child and dreaming of being a composer). I actually wanted to play violin because kids in school that played the violin started a year earlier than other instruments (4th grade as opposed to 5th grade) but my parents didn't think I had the coordination.

FWIW two or three months ago I was at my mother's house doing our usual chores for her she shocked me when she said that she should have got me into Berklee (highly doubtful I would have made it though had I had any encouragement from my mother in those days who knows what I would been capable of). It wasn't until about 10 years ago my mother even acknowledged I had some talent, and that was when I wrote a song for my sister's memorial service.

OMG, you have to see Head. Equals/surpasses any Beatles movie. Trippy, trippy stuff. Bye Davy. You were one of the first of the tsunami of Brits to put American music through its perspective and it's so better for that.

Sad..
I got my first guitar because of the Beatles, but the first song in my first band was a Monkee's tune.
goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
