I know I might be a little behind the times on this but is anyone currently using their ipad successively as a useable tone module?? Is there a host available that would allow you to run windows based VSTi's??

I'd like to know how deep I can get this to work in my live rig.

Thanks People! :D

I have used my iPad (original) in live situations. In one sense, it has worked very well, in another sense, it didn't work as well as I had hoped.

One of the problems with the iPad apps are the inconsistency in how you access the sounds. Some respond to all MIDI (OMNI only) channels. Others let you set a specific MIDI channel. Some apps let you run them in the background, others you MUST have as the currently running app. Some respond to program change, others don't. So if you want to access sounds from various apps, you may find yourself having to flip between apps and manually changing sounds within an app which is NOT at all ideal in a live situation. Unless you have several seconds before you need that sound.

I found the iPad 1 just not fast enough to make it as useful for live as I had hoped. I was planning to get an iPad 3 to maybe better handle app switching and faster patch changes, but in the end, I just have not found an app (or set of apps) that really covered the full sound palette I am looking for. In the end, I bought a new Motif Rack XS about three weeks ago and am extremely pleased and happy with it.

The good with the iPad live is, if you remain with one app, and you find useful sounds, it does work well. For me, I was using GarageBand for the fantastic organs and some strings. It worked very well and I was even getting positive comments about my new sounds I was using. But since having bought the Motif Rack, I have stopped using the iPad live. Though I am planning to put it back in the MIDI chain and use it again with maybe Animoog, Alchemy, GarageBand, Sunrizer and/or Nanostudio.

Not at this time. There is not really anything like this yet. Would certainly be nice to have. I'm not sure the AppStore model of purchasing will make this a valid option right now.

I would bet a nut that what your asking will never happen on an iPad 3 (if indeed it is the 3 that's being announced next week) as nothing exists to emulate anything windows based, or even anything to host Apples own Audio Unit virtual instrument format.

You need a laptop or Receptor.
No, that Glitch is meant to be there.....

I'd bet a few bucks that Apple is planning a full blown version of Logic X and MainStage for iPad, including all or many of the synths..accelerated by the GPU.

I really hope they don't. It would force me to buy the damn thing.

+1 from me. I don't have the cash any more since I wasted it on an Ipad 2. Nothing I don't regret doing though.

It is only a matter of time before they do this. But at what level of depth could they take it- and still only sell it for $4.99 like Garageband iOS I don't know. I think Mainstage iOS would be freaking awesome- Logic would be cool but MS is my first hope.

Theres going to have to be limitations there. IOS dosnt allow plugins so it wont be as full as you might like. Thats why current apps are standalone. There is one app that has limited plugins but they are compiled into the app itself so they arnt seperate plugins.

Right but since logic already comes with all those bundles plugins they can simply include them as part of the universal binary. The GarageBand for iOS app kind of foreshadows this
