Does anyone know of a good player that allows you to process the output through a vst? This should exist in pristine quality and total reliability. Does it?

Do you mean a normal music player for PC?
Get Winamp, there is a winamp plugin to open VST effects in the add-ons section, in the website.
Not completely compatible with every plugin, but it's ok.
The Winamp plugin is here

That is version 1.0 there is a newer version on his website (in the link I posted)

Solid. Much thanks guys! I want to be able to setup a room eq using fabfilter pro-Q which can be saved and inserted as the last plugin in my tracks plus used when playing tracks off my hard drive so that it's all got the same curve applied. I retired my KRK ergo for a Lavry DA10 because it's much cleaner. I need a little eq though still.
