Now there is nothing wrong with counterpoint, but you have to realize that if your goal is to write contemporary music (ie. hit songs), then most of it can be considered obsolete. My initial question in this post was in the assumption of "if it exists to caounterpoint, why not to melody writing?".
It just won't fly.
When writing melody for contemporary pop music, you just have to trust your ears. As for rules, make sure to have lots of I, IV and V. And do stay in key. That's all.
(Though I'm sure many people will try to refute this blasphemous statement furiously.
