Hi guys,

I'm in the market for either an iPad 2/3 or some android tablet + some hardware for doing multi-mic recordings. Unfortunately it seems like nobody is catering to this market yet.

Have I missed something or is there really no company that provides a solid solution for recording up to 4 microphones at the same time on separate tracks for either android or iPad?

Do I really have to go the oldschool way of purchasing some Tascam portastudio crap or similar?

I'll be needing this for field recording so if somebody has any ideas for better options then by all means suggest them. The most important requirement is that it can record at least 4 microphones with phantom power for all. If it's battery operated then all the better but this is most likely not an option with 4x phantom power. I have a custom solution for that so no worries.

Anyhow, I thought that an iPad 2 or 3 would be the best option as it's a bit more future proof than the typical field recording hardware. It's battery life is also very impressive which is a massive bonus.

Another option would perhaps be a tiny netbook with long battery life but will these really be able to record long stretches of audio and up to 4 microphones?

There is that new DAW coming that will do something like 24 tracks at once. So, if you pair that with a 4-in core audio interface- you should have a great iPad system to do your recording with

If you have the money you can buy an RME UFX which can record by itself onto a memory stick. Has 4 mic pres and plenty of other IO and it seems like depending on the USB stick you can record A LOT of channels simultaneously.

Netbooks are just as fast or slow as other computers, remember that the bottleneck when recording something is not your CPU speed but your harddrive speed.

Read the whole thread. The developer of Multitrack DAW no longer recommends the Tascam US-800.

The only two proven options are the Fireface UCX (spendy) and the Lexicon Omega. I think both require their own power source, though.
