I can only assume that Rack Extension was the closest best description to fit the "RE" they use for all their products. Maybe it's not 100% accurate to define what it is..

Personally i think it's a usb cable to plug in into your brain and that you extend the rack that way. CV via brainwaves!

I think any possible Rack extension would have to be a way to load any Propellerheads FX or instrument into any VST host. Has to be IMO. Maybe even something that also allows Reason to be loaded as a VSTi or using an as yet unkown (Propellerhead format) that allows for ARA level of integration with hosts. It would have to be pretty amazing to rival ARA integration though.

I dont know a single person who would really actually give a shit about that. Even the (old) Reason users.
Maybe I dont know the right doods?
The painful truth to my eyes is that they have some catching up to do to stay viable. More painful; How can it not involve VST?
If they are smart "Rack Extension" is their proprietary name for a heavy duty "uncrashable" VST wrapper.

Rewind to about 6 years ago, and in an interview with CM magazine Propellerhead CEO Ernst N-Boos promised that there would be four things Reason would never embrace:

1) Audio Recording
2) Dongle copy protection
3) VST
4) MIDI out

Two down, two to go.

They also had a company name and a mission statement that directly stated they wouldn't go into the hardware business... ooops.

Whatever Rack Extension turns out to be, I'll be surprised if it isn't a fancy way of them again going back on their original vision, making Reason even more complex/bloated, and trying to catch up with a world that they left behind by pursuing what proved to be the wrong vision.

But there's more: four of the other quite distinctive things that especially appealed to me about Reason in the past were:
1) Low CPU overhead
2) bullet-proof programme stability
3) helpful customer support
4) fair and transparent upgrade prices

In the last 2-3 years Propellerhead have in my direct experience trashed all four of these former attractions.

no longer a company I can really support. Which is a genuine shame, because I have loved being a Reason user over many years, and some of their former products and approach to business were just great.

I agree on the first two. Since I have not had any real issues with the program besides cpu I have no experience with customer support. As far as #4 I got the upgrade to 6 for $1 so I can;t complain

Then again I've been asking for this very thing since Reason was version ~2.. why would they listen to me now?

Reason for Ipad wouldn't be "excited" or "big" - are the ipads powerful enough to finish a full length song anyway?
The biggest thing that would be part of the next Reason is VST support or Reason PRO.

Even if Reason finally went vst, they now enter the world of daws,competing with Studio One,Reaper,Cubase,Pro Tools,Fl Studio etc. They would really have to have a better workflow for me then S1 and I just don't think it's possible for my $
Their original vision has proved to be the wrong one.

They simply didn't understand the very simple business model of "The customer is always right" we knew what we wanted and we went for the companies that followed that model. At least everyone I know did..lol softsynths n daw vs Thor etc. n reason,it was never even a question for me. And the stability thing was proven to be a joke,as I've always ran a stable cpu and daw. soooooo

I dont know why so many people say they are wrong, it does have some of the best pro reviews and it seems to be one of the best sellers, at least, in some big stores like thoman, above Live, S1, (I have always seen it in second place).

Anyway, I agree it does need many workflow improvements plus some new and updated devices and features. Give it a "session" mode and gets perfect IMO
