you could get an enclosure for about $25 for the Caviar.. simple as plugging in two cables and closing it up..

Post

Could you recommend the enclosure then please? The caviar is already expensive as is.--more expensive than the OWC external drive. Then again, your point is that the scorpio black coupled with an enclosure will be better than whatever OWC puts into its own enclosures, correct?

In That case, I'd need an enclosure with fw800, USB 2.0, eSATA, and its own power source.

Post

why do you want all three connections? i would choose either firewire or USB and stick with it.. most enclosures have a wall plug.. here in the states i can get a 1TB Black for $130.. i didn't realize that it would be more over there..

Post

having all three ports bumps the price up a little to $40 - here is one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817347017

Post

Ah so close! But it looks like a lot of people hate this drive for its faulty power supply and loose connections. hmm...

Post

ya - this is just my example of a cheap (sub $60) enclosure with all three connection types.. but, which interface do you have and want to use? it can be USB 2.0 - i have a friend who uses multiple USB drives and they perform just fine..

Post

fw800 with usb 2.0 as well would be ideal, but I'd like fw800 if possible.

Order of importance: fw800> usb 2.0 > eSATA(don't even have an input-would need to replace the enclosure if I were to get a Mac Pro someday, but this would be fine.) > everything else.

Post

it appears that USB + 1394 is the less common combination, so here is another with all three - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817392018

FW400 is enough for two Caviars running at the same time i would say - more than enough for one drive at maximum operation.. i don't see FW800 right here yet..
here is what i am looking at - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... IsNodeId=1

I'm afraid that I require firewire 800 because my computer doesn't support firewire 800 without a converter, which I don't have.

By the way, thank you for helping me with this search. You have no idea how grateful I am; most of the time this sort of investigation ends without ay results.

Post

you can get a fw800 -> fw400 cable - since you would likely need a new cable anyway - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812308006

Post

or this - very cheap - made for the exact purpose on the latest macbooks - http://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-FireWire-4 ... B0000CDJPQ

Post

Thanks, but a firewire 800 enclosure would really be great. There really isn't such a thing as a good affordable one then?
At this rate, I'd spend about $250.

Post

i have never used FW800..
i see this one has it, but is 2.5" - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817347028
you could put a Scorpio in that..

Post

I'm still not sure that you've identified the problem correctly.

I'd hate for you to spend the money and find it makes no difference.

In cubase, in the transport panel there are two vertical displays next to each other, the one on the left is cpu, the one on the right is disk usage. The one on the right is going into the red and the audio is stopping? Right?

If it's anything else it's not the hard drive.

Also it's good of Ford to do all the searching but you've obviously got some specific criteria in mind so what if you did some searching found three or four that you like and are in budget and he could tell you if they're any good?

I would also avoid replacing the internal drive as you'll have to reinstall the OS and all the programs, vsts, vstis, au's and whatever other formats you use.
I would be concerned about the transfer rate of usb2 it's fine for backing up and playing movie etc but multiple streams of audio, I'm not sure. Also most of your samplesets will be loaded into memory anyway unless you've specified 'stream from disk'.

Let me know.

I agree that replacing the internal drive would be insane, so I'm going the external route for sure. The question is if we can find a suitable and affordable enclosure for the caviar hard drive, that is, if it's really the best for this purpose. Firewire 800 is beter than USB 2.0 for streaming, no doubt.

...to be honest, I have not been the greatest internet searcher in the world. I have looked for these these types of products in the past, to no avail.
