Hey all.
Well, I love Audio Hijack Pro.
Why? Simply because it allows me to run the audio from ANY app (web browsers included) though my plugins, chained however I want!
Yes, that means Microsoft Excel with effects. ;)
- screw trackers!
j.k. I love trackers,
but I'm also falling in love with all sorts of other apps that I now have a way to work with in new, and exciting ways.
Want to trigger MIDI with SoundyThingie or Balldroppings? No problem - with an audio to MIDI plug and a plugin version of Bidule, EnergyXT, or PedalBoard.
Want to resynthesize text-to-speech in real time without recording the speech first? No problem. I just set up a whole ebook to play back through an agorithmically generated effects unit. Worked like a charm.
Want to apply effects to g200kg's browser-based WebGroove? No problem. Works great with CableGuy's VolumeShaper. Tons of fun.

So I'm wondering; what experiments have you tried?

Below is a list of non-plugin-hosting apps I've turned into plugin-hosts. Well, truthfully I just hijacked them, but I like to think of them as hosts when hijacked for some reason.

Any to add to the list of interesting apps to hijack?

Nothing really to add, but I find AH super useful too. There are some good resources and info in your post, thanks for sharing!

Oh, one thing I like to do is load multiple copies of the program sunvox, route MIDI between them so they trigger themselves and record it all with audio-hijack until sunvox comes crashing down (or OSX's MIDI routing system rather).

Another thing that I've been experimenting with is using audio hijack to monitor various audio streams, but not record them. This can be useful for improvisational purposes when I can adjust the sound of something without having it recorded.

And have you ever tried hijacking the system audio while using renoise? For some reason it stops working for me after a few seconds, but works fine if I select the renosie app directly as a target.

hey!

i'm the maker of soundythingie...

do you by any chance have a video of how you use that midi triggering? it sounds really interresting!

best,
hansi.

Wow! Nice to meet you hansi!
You made a wonderful app that I'm often showing people on my iPad, but was overjoyed to discover a Mac version of.
I'm glad you asked about whether I have a video of how I use it, as I've been making a lot of videos lately, and that would be a great one to do next.
I'll certainly make it.
It's the least I can do, considering how much pleasure I've gotten from using soundythingie!
Back in a bit...

Hi Hansi :)
Here yah go:

soundythingie (for Mac OSX) - available here: http://www.linienmusik.net/
- mind blowing fun
- there's an ipad version too - slightly different, but also great

Friends:

Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro (to hijack the audio coming from soundythingie, and host a plugin version of Bidule)

Plogue's Bidule (2 plugin instances - One in Audio Hijack Pro for hosting WIDISoft's MIDI to Audio converter, transposing the MIDI, sending it to Renoise, and allowing mixing between soundythingie and Renoise, the other in AudioMulch for allowing the control of related parameters from AudioMulch's Metasurface)

WIDIsoft's WIDI Audio to MIDI (VST plugin version hosted in Audio Hijack Pro)

Renoise (for it's kick ass sampler)

AudioMulch (for it's amaaaazing Metasurface)

Audio Damage Eos (beautiful reverb)

ScreenFlow (great screen and audio recorder + video editor)

Blip Drums Platinum Collection (samples)

Voxengo AcuDrums Snare Drum 1450 (samples)

hey!

i had to skip ahead a bit in the video cause i'm really tired right now,
but it looks really cool. love the rhythms that form...
also it makes me reconsider a bit ... maybe built-in midi support would be a good feature :)

best, hansi.
p.s. i've added a link to your video from the linienmusik website ...

Post

Hey, no worries about the skipping ahead.
It is kinda long.
I was planning to make a shorter video; around 5 minutes, but I was just having so much fun it turned into a bit of an epic.
soundythingie is very addictive as a MIDI controller.
Really excited you're thinking of building in MIDI support.
I think it would be amazing and unique.
Of course it is already!

btw, I feel honoured to have a link on your website! No problem, and thanks.
I'll post some shorter recordings too, perhaps with different setups, and better explanations of how I put them together.

Yuuuup I love AHP. I use it for recording things from netflix and youtube and stuff like that.

Just did another hijacking experiment:

Marimba Meanderings with BallDroppings and Friends

Instruments:

BallDroppings (provided the trigger that drove a sequencer made with Bidule)

Bidule (provided a means to make a custom sequencer which created MIDI notes for Chromaphone)

Chromaphone (Physically modelled synth that was the source of the sound heard)

AudioMulch (AudioMulch's Metasurface was used to transition between the sequencer settings and Chromaphone's various settings)

Audio Hijack Pro (used to hijack the sound from BallDroppings and host the WIDI Audio to MIDI plugin which essentially turned BallDroppings into a MIDI controller. The MIDI was sent to Bidule and ran the note sequencer previously mentioned)

WIDI Audio to MIDI VST plugin (another star of the show)

Eos (reverb plugin - hosted by AudioMulch - which created a lovely - imo - spaciousness for Chromaphone)

ScreenFlow (screen and audio capture software used to make this video)

Safari (browser used to run BallDroppings)

Cool videos David!

There is something similar for windows?

Post

Why do you use the browser based version of ball droppings? With the standalone app you can open it up to add new sounds. :)

Oh and what about OSCulator? Super useful.

Not sure. Don't know of anything off hand.

:dog: I found the browser-based version via the processing.org exhibition:
http://processing.org/exhibition/curated_page_9.html
Didn't realize there was a standalone version! Thanks for letting me know. :)

I actually haven't played around with OSCulator! Will do so. :)
