I wish I could give you good news. I noticed you're on a mac. I've been back and forth with a rep here in the U.S. about this for the year and a half I've owned my NUMA. Only recently did the Fatar site in Italy even post a mac-compatible download application for making updates, and I could not get it to work at all. A few months back I called the store where I bought it (out of state), and she basically commiserated with me regarding the complete lack of mac support.

The rep here in the U.S. initially sent me an email promising a solution. I've checked back with him at six-month intervals, and he basically quit responding (not faulting him, though I'm guessing he had no solutions to work with either). I've never heard back from anyone directly from Fatar in Italy on this, despite several email inquiries.

At one point the rep here told me that they would be releasing a mac solution in January of 09, then it was bumped until after NAMM 09. Uh Hum. That was a year ago, obviously.

I stumbled on your post here, precisely because I figured there had to be some reason they've now posted mac software for retrieving OS/Firmware updates - and was hoping to find someone who had actually made this work.

Anyway, I did try uploading via a mac booted into Windows a few months back, and that did not work either.

I'm in the same boat as you - still on the original firmware. At the very worst I get constant freezes when booting, and have to turn the NUMA on/off again to get the USB to work. I noticed in the last update they posted (the pdf) it mentioned that this was addressed. But with no way to actually update the device, I can't say.

It's really abysmal when you think about it, given the price of the keyboard. Perhaps this is why the seller on ebay was getting rid of it? It's a great feeling device, to be sure, but the fact that there has been no mac support since its introduction two years ago inexcusable.

If you find out anything, let me know as well. I've exhausted my options.

I can't get the Numa's Mac software to connect to the Internet. Praying that someone has figured this one out.

Please reach out, if you have any idea how to update the firmware on this thing--I am stuck on the original OS and would love to update from the shit OS I am on now.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have!

Thanks for the helpful insight! I have an old Windows laptop, with XP on it. Which Windows did you use?

Great to see you have a Windows machine you can do this with. Its been at least four years since the orignal Numa, and they never really developed a functional updater for the Mac OS. At one point they told me it was too difficult for them to find a suitable Mac developer where they were located. That was over three years ago..

As much as I love the Numa, the high price does not justify Mac users having to find a Windows solution, IMHO. My dual boot mac laptop seemed to not support the updater running Windows, but I have always been curious if this solution worked for anybody else.

Ultimately, I got the Numa swapped out for a newer one because of constant crashes. Even now, however, I don't use the Numa via USB at all, utilizing the old school midi out instead. For sustain and mod I use another controller, and this has eliminated all the freezes I was plagued with (even the replacement Numa exhibited the same freezes). My internal settings are all fine on the Numa, btw.

1. Download Windows version of Numa Control Panel. Once downloaded and unzipped, copy the file called "W_XpDriver_Vcomm_FU" from the Numa Control Panel folder to your Desktop.

2. Download the most current Numa OS.

3. Run the following setup file you just downloaded: Setup_NumaOnline.

4. You will now have a folder called "FirmwareUpgrade" (probably on your desktop). IMPORTANT: Copy the Numa OS you downloaded to this folder. You MUST do this.

5. Connect USB cable from Numa to your computer.

6. Go into the Add Hardware Wizard in the Windows Control Panel and go through the process of manually adding a hardware device. This is a bit of a complicated process:

a. Choose "Yes, I have already connected the hardware". Click Next>

b. Scroll down the "Installed hardware" options, until you find and choose "Add a new hardware device". Click Next>

c. Choose "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list." Click Next>

d. Choose "Show All Devices." Click Next>

e. Ignore choices and click the "Have Disk..." button.

f. Click Browse and go to your Desktop. Select the file named "W_XpDriver_Vcomm_FU.inf" Click Open.

g. Click any remaining OK buttons and finish this sub-process.

7. Now, open the NumaOnLine application.

8. Turn on your Numa and enter the EDIT function. Scroll to the right until you have reached the System screen, click "PC," then click "VCom"

9. On your computer, in the NumaOnLine application, click "Set USB Vcom" and then click "AUTO Search." The text field right above should populate with the correct virtual serial port. (This was COM5 on my machine, but may vary.) Close this small window.

10. You should now see the current OS in the middle field of the NumaOnLine app. Check the box right next to it and click "LOAD OS" on left side of NumaOnLine app. A red sub-window will now pop up.

11. Restart the Numa keyboard and follow any remaining instructions on app and keyboard.

12. You have now updated the Numa--congrats!

I apologize if any of the preceding is difficult to follow. I am usually a Mac user, and this was quite an ordeal

So how much did you pay for that Mac-compatible Numa? : )

Ha!

I actually think that the above process would work fine in Parallels, running on a Mac. The only potential sticking point is whether the Add Hardware control panel would generate the COM-port spoof without issue. My suspicion is that it would work, but I did not test it.

Hello,

I am a recent buyer of the Studio Logic Numa (White). I picked it up on ebay and found that it was operating on v1.1 firmware. I use a mac so was concerned about the issues.

However, I went to the website and navigated to the Numa Nero downloads page. They have firmware 1.7 on the website and a version for the older keys. I would like to report that the mac firmware updater is working perfectly. I did not manage to get it to automatically recognize the correct firmware - in fact it only found a version 2.2 which did not work with my keyboard.

Having already installed the mac Numa Control Panel I then downloaded firmware version 1.7 to my desktop and unzipped it. I then moved the .FTR file to ...library/application support/Fatar/Numa Control Panel/Local

It shows up in the local folder of the Control Panel. You can successfully use it to update your keyboard with no issues at all.

I figured a correct (and working) procedure how to install a new firmware version on a Studiologic Numa Nano having unresponsive touchscreen :) . I expect same procedure will work for the Numa Nero and Numa (white) as well and might also work for other Numa versions.

I bought a second hand keyboard of which the former owned failed to install a new firmware version after the touchscreen lost its functionality and the Numa Online failed to establish a link to the keyboard. After lots of puzzling I succeeded to install a new firmware version, after the touchscreen came back to live again. In my case I am using Microsoft Windows operating system.

Since I had to find a proper method, I used a Window XP (32 bit version). Later I discovered that the same methodology also can be used on a Windows 7 (32 bits version) and on Windows 10 (32 bits version). I found the Studiologic software requires 32 bits version (could not install on 64 bits software versions).

I discovered, developed and used following procedure:
1. Connect the keyboard using the USB cable to your computer and turn it on. Wait until Windows finished installing the drivers.
2. To upgrade the firmware, you need a working Virtual USB port on your computer having the correct settings. The Virtual USB port is labelled "USB Virtual COM port - FU". I will refer to this label further in this procedure.
3. To check if this virtual USB port is present and has correct settings you need to observe its presence (and settings), which becomes visible in the Device Manager (the device manager can be found under the control panel from your computer) and unfolding the ports (COM & LPT section).
4. This virtual USB port just becomes visible (and active) during the few seconds after the keyboard is switched on. Likely, during that time sequence the keyboard does a discovery using this virtual USB connection to detect a firmware upgrade is requested and available in the que line.
5. Download the Numa Control panel from the Studiologic website (download or copy it on a folder on your desktop).
6. Unzip the Numa Control panel.
7. From the unzipped folder copy the file "W-XpDriver _VComm_FU to your desktop.
8. Install the Numa Online software by clicking "Setup_NumaOnline.msi within the unzipped folder.
9. Check if the folder "FirmwareUpgrade" is created on your desktop. If not, please create a new folder on your desktop and change it name to "Firmwareupgrade".
10. Download the correct firmware version from the Studiologic website and download (or copy) it to the "Firmwareupgrade" on your desktop.
Important note (!):
I found 2 firmware versions on the Studiologic website:
(1) VERSION 1.22: Valid only for serial numbers up to XXXXITXX00210 and all previous labels.
(2) VERSION 2.1: Valid only for serial numbers from XXXXITXX00211.
Please check the serial number of your keyboard and download the correct version (im my case version 1.22).
11. Turn off the keyboard, connect the USB cable, Open Device Manager and unfold the ports (COM & LPT) section.
12. Turn on the keyboard and check if the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" gets visible for few seconds.
It should flash by (few seconds) and states the COM port assigned (e.g. "COM 3" or “COM4”).
13. You will observe a "Firmwareupgrader" flashing by in case the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" is not properly installed. In such case you need to install the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" drivers. If required, move to step 14, else move to step 15.
14. (skip this step in case the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" device shows up, else install the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" drivers:
14a. For Windows XP, (1) open the "Control Panel" and (2) click on the "Add Hardware"" button.
14b. For Windows 7, (1) open de "Device manager", (2) select any of the devices, (3) Click on the "Action" button and select "Add legacy hardware"
14c. Follow the manually installation process for a device already connected to your computer.
14d. Follow "All devices" and click the "Have disk" option.
14e. Browse to the desktop and select the "W_XpDriver_VComm_FU.inf" drivers file.
14f. Click the "OK", "Next", "Next", "Finish" buttons until the device is installed.
14g. The device will become visible under the "Device Manager" ports (COM & LPT) section.
14h. The "USB Virtual COM port - FU" will be indicated with a "!" warning sign, indicating the device is not working properly.
14i. Select the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" device and delete it. This will remain the required drivers at the proper locations of your computer.
14j. Repeat (verify) steps 11 and 12.
15. To install a new firmware version “COM 3” needs to be assigned. In my case a wrong COM port ("COM 4") was assigned, reason why all my earlier trials to upgrade the firmware upgrade failed.
16. If a wrong COM port is assigned, you need to grab the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" properties tab in the few seconds it flashes by. Alternatively, you may verify that COM 3 is available before you installl the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" device. You may (1) uninstall the modem before starting to install the "USB Virtual COM port - FU"; next (2) install "USB Virtual COM port - FU"; (3) search new devices to reinstall the modem. This will provide another COM port to the modem.
17. Turn on the keyboard and quickly select the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" when it flashes by (select it and right click your mouse button). The properties menu will open (and will remains open) such you can assign the correct COM port.
18. Select the "Port Settings"" tab and click the "Advanced" section.
19. The Advance section opens and at the bottom of that menu you find a "COM port number:" option.
20. Select "COM 3". In case “COM 3” is not available, proceed with step 21, else move to step 22.
21. In case “COM 3” is already assigned, you will need to free up that assignment first. First determine which device is using the COM 3 port. In my case the COM3 port was already assigned to a modem. After selecting that modem in the “Device Manager” I could assign another COM port to the modem, after “COM 3” became available to be assigned to the "USB Virtual COM port - FU". Next, move to step 17 resp. 18.
22. Click the "OK" buttons until your back in the Device Manager, after the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" will have disappeared.
23. Turn off the keyboard and turn it on again. Now the "USB Virtual COM port - FU" will flash by again having the correct "COM 3" port assigned and you are ready to upload a new firmware version from your computer to the keyboard.
24. Turn of the keyboard and connect the USB cable to your computer.
25. Click the "NumaOnline" icon on your dashboard.
26. Wait till the "Numa Online software becomes operative (took some time on my computer when I opened it for the first time).
27. Below the second section "On PC Operative Systems" you will find the file "NumaNano-OS_1.22.FTR" (and other firmware versions that might be present in the "FirmwareUpgrade" folder on your desktop).
Select the firmware version you want to install (in my case ...1.22.FTR).
28. Click the button "Set USB VCom" which should show the COM 3 Serial Port. In my case I colud not change this setting. Close the "Set USB VCom" window.
29. Click the "LOAD OS" button. A red window "Restart the instrument to OS Upgrade !" will pop up.
30. Turn on the keyboard. The firmware starts to upload/download from your computer to the keyboard, as indicated by a green bar visible under the "LOAD OS" button.
31. Wait until the firmware upgrade has been completed. The red window will close after completion.
32. Turn off the keyboard.
33. Turn on the keyboard and the new firmware version has become operational (although in my case) .
After this firmware upgrade, the touchpad was fully functionally again.
(Please note that the edit menu is activated by touching both pads < and > simultaneously. After, the display shows Edit, the respective parameter and the patch name.

Hope this procedure may be helpful for others experiencing same problem.

Adrian :)
