It's also incomparable because Steam is just an online store and library system, you don't spend any real time -playing- steam or anything of that sort, with a DAW so much of it is unique in workflow, I'd hate to be locked into using Reason's sequencer or rewire all the time because all of my plugins are dependent on it.

You are write about the DAW user population being alot smaller. We'll see how it goes. However I did read somewhere that Reason was the second highest selling DAW in the US after Pro Tools. I believe based on retail sales. I don't remember the source it may have been some Line 6 press release.EvilDragon wrote:The problem is that gaming population is quite bigger than those of DAW users. And of those DAW users, Reason doesn't have a really big cut, since other DAWs that support the de-facto standard VST/AU plugins get a lot more use overall.

But you are locked into Steam's DRM. And you are also locked into Windows, you can't use Unix or Open Solaris.liquid wind wrote:It's also incomparable because Steam is just an online store and library system, you don't spend any real time -playing- steam or anything of that sort, with a DAW so much of it is unique in workflow, I'd hate to be locked into using Reason's sequencer or rewire all the time because all of my plugins are dependent on it.

What would drive a PT, Live, FL, S1 etc. to move to Reason just because of Re? To get the same (?) (paid again) VST and an inferior sequencer and a Medusa of cables? To rewire the whole thing back in their favorite DAW? I own Reason so I have the momentum to use Re and Reason as usual and probably more often but for a non user you got to come up with something outstanding. Are Thor and Kong that glorious to make you switch you DAW. I can't see anything there worth leaving Mainland for the "Island" just because they are dropping from the air some exotic food.... You'll be still on an Island!
Am I being too extreme? Maybe... But I can't see all that pull for the rest of us non Reason Esclusive.

I think you are right, it will not attract too many new users but is more aimed at relieving existing users of their money. I certainly would not be interested in paying for Reason to then pay for RE plugins that are locked into one program when I could by a VST I could use in any number of hosts instead.liquidsound wrote:What would drive a PT, Live, FL, S1 etc. to move to Reason just because of Re? Steam is available for Windows and Mac, and semi-officialy supported to run in Linux under Wine.v1o wrote:But you are locked into Steam's DRM. And you are also locked into Windows, you can't use Unix or Open Solaris.

I don't think you are being too extreme - those already invested in another (fuller-featured) DAW are unlikely to switch, and I doubt Propellerhead expect that to happen.liquidsound wrote:What would drive a PT, Live, FL, S1 etc. to move to Reason just because of Re? But I don't agree this is the quite it either....coops2 wrote:

I think that Propellerhead want to:
1) Retain their existing users at a time when there's increased competition in the DAW market and other programmes simply offer a LOT more features than Reason (NB: not necessarily better ones)
2) Relieve pressure on the Reason developers at a time when most of Reason's own instruments and effects are VERY dated compared to the competition
3) Grab brand new users who are buying their first full DAW. The sales figures from Reason 6 show there is still a huge and growing market here.... and if there is going to be an ongoing stream of inexpensive Apps, this is an added attraction for those new users, and something that the press will also love and promote.

I REALLY don't get what the big deal is. Ableton has done the same thing for years, just that Props just makes it more convenient. Why do so many people here try to slam Propellerhead for such a simple and regular concept. It's beyond me how this can be a problem to anyone.

This might be of interest for you, SonicState interviewed Urs at Messe. Some great stuff about all his projects but he does talk about Rack Extensions for a bit too: http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2012/03/ ... from-u-he/

I for one am looking forward to how this develops, and if it is to my liking, I will probably use it. If it isn't, I probably won't.
That's my entire insight to this 43 page thread.
