without hip hop, trip hop would have probably never happened as it did
leaving us without...
which on its own would be criminal, but massive attack, tricky and so on, all would have sounded veeeery different, probably...
that a world you want to live in? where portishead sound like fleetwood mac instead of portishead? crazy mofos.

I hate this sentiment. It's not even something to argue with: what is 'most', what is 'new', what is 'almost' impossible? but it's a sentiment, a POV.Bronto Scorpio wrote: The problem with "traditional music" (drums + vocals + bass + guitar etc.) is that it's almost impossible to write something really new these days since everything has already been there in one form or another
'The' problem with [this particular instrumentation]. Hmmm, seems like a problem I don't have... whose problem is it?
'drums' is a limiting factor how? 'Bass', 'guitar', a limiting factor how? But surely the combo of these means it *is* 'almost impossible' to create something 'new'? It sounds like an excuse.

all you have there is some labels, which you'd need in order to figure out what bin in the record store, or now to tag for CD Baby/iTunes store. As though these labels stand for the activity itself, the thing-in-itself.hibidy wrote:So for real, what is there to be "into" that is ahead of it's time now? hip hop, tarnce, dub step, bro step, two step, "alternative", frying pan, it's all been done.
There are people that make music for its own sake and are not limited by these paltry conceptions as a prima facie, that do not have to follow conventions. Or that can make something 'new' from/inside a tradition. if you're following a convention, ie., a label ['two step'] derived from an attribute that's been done enough to codify into language, the intent won't be to be novel in the first place.
this, novelty, as a cart to pull the horse of making some music doesn't cut it either. Some things are new because somebody went for something no one did. Maybe by accident! This is not impossible, it's not 'highly improbable' unless you create this mindset so it is. It's an excuse for laziness on more than one front.
Enough people buy into this anti-thought, maybe that's a factor, maybe ultimately there's less 'new', but it's anti-evolutionary.

I think we need to bring nickleback and the black keys into the discussion.
