I am currently looking to buy a pair of studio monitors and looking for a little help.

On a tight budget so want to keep cost down as much as possible, while being able to achieve reasonable results.

Currently on a really poor pair of desktop pc speakers so anything is an improvement really, but looking for the best value for money really.

Currently looking at:

Behringer Truth B1030A Active Studio Monitors - approx £180

KRK Rokit RP5 G2 Active Studio Monitors - approx £250

I have read a few reviews etc, get the feeling that the Behringers are really good for such a low price. Getting mixed reviews regarding the RP5's so I am wondering if the extra cost would be justified.

Working in a small room with zero treatment, which obviously has its flaws.
From what i have read the 5" sub should do the job, even though i'll be losing some lows.
On a side note i'll be producing dance music.

Any help/experience would be appreciated, thank you :)

i have used the Behringer TRUTH B2030a monitors for about 7 years and they were a huge improvement from hi-fi speakers.. the 1031 looks awfully small - unless you are concerned about keeping things low volume, i would look at the B2030a for only $20 more..

Thank you for the reply,

Yeah going to be mostly low volume.

Thinking of going for the krk rokit rp5 at the moment, but mixed reviews, need to
give them a listen i think.

£87.48 inc VAT

If your on a budget you won't beat that price, but get some feedback on these first, they may be all you need! I don't own them myself, but I would look into them if I was looking for new ones...ask others...

Cheers man, will check those out too :)

be aware that those StudioSpares are passive and therefore need a separate amplifier..

I use a cheap Cambridge Audio amplifier like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cambridge-Aud ... 1c24b9d941

I bought mine new but their are a few on Ebay, I'd pick an amp up second hand if I where on a tight budget though... :)

still available new from Richer Sounds for £99 new also

but that's now pushing the price up to £187 combined if you buy the amp new...

do be sure to spend a proportionate amount on your speakers - if you have $2000 worth of gear and computers then maybe you could save $500 or so to get something that will last you through years - just my $0.02 - i spent about $400 on my B2030A set - now, 7 years later, i have invested in a pair of ADAM A7X..! they should be arriving this week.. but, since i spent $700 on each speaker - these may well be the last monitors that i ever buy..

I got my pair for a really good price used -- but still new in box off Amazon, and I LOVE THEM!

Thx for replies guys,

Going to order rokit rp5's very soon, along with a focusrite 2i2.

I just need to know which cables to order with them, im guessing balanced is the best.

Do i go TRS > TRS?

or TRS > XLR?

and are these mono cables?

I would visit one of the Pro Music Shops and take some material that you are familiar with, and listen to about 5 - 10 different brands with the same music. The differences will be more apparent, and you can make a decision based on what you're hearing.

you want balanced if your interface sends a balanced signal and especially if you have equipment in the room that could actually interfere into your cables. unbalanced is fine if you are sending out unbalanced signal in the first place. you will mostly find that TRS > XLR are balanced, but there are all variations. it will say on the product page if they are balanced or not.

you get more bang for your buck with these over the krk rp5, and a good price too

Get the JBL LSR2325Ps instead of the Rokit 5s, they are immeasurably better in every possible way.
