And of course Arturia's Minimoog
I believe Moogs were banished in the 80s. :hihi:

Rolands, Yamaha DXs and Oberheims were the way to go.

In case you're also interested in 80's production techniques, specifically for drums, here's an article about creating the "sound" of the 80's:

TB303?

No, seriously - there can't have been a synth that was more definitive of the 80s than that one - 88,89 is still 80s, and that scene was huge. And I was usually as happy as ***k most times I heard a 303 :P

Anyone mentioned the Korg M1 and Wavestation? The M1 piano was a big happy sound. It was all over Happy House (before it moved on to become MostlyIndifferentBipolarHouseStep).

Jupiter 8. Human League used it everywhere. I supposed Being Boiled wasn't necessarily that happy, but they went on to make lots of happy 80s cheese.

Difficult to pin it down cos through the 80s there were a shitload of synths being used to good effect. Post Punk through Roxy Music through New Romantic through to Acid. The 80s covers a lot of ground y'know...I'm sure I remember even Stevie Wonder was still having the odd happy hit in the 80s.

SQ8L - It is based on a less known 80's synth, but is dead on accurate. Its also free.
FM8 - Its an FM synth, the more bright sounds will be there. It was based on the DX synths which were used endlessly in 80s music.
DIVA - For the roland analog sound (The Cure), and a ton of others.

It'd true generally Moog was dead in the water but not the memorymoog. Hammer used that all over Miami Vice and there are emulations available for it. Diva also does a good memorymoog string sound.
