TB ReelBus v3

Post

Out of Ferox, Kramer Tape and FabFilter Saturn, TB Reel gobbles up the most CPU on my system.

Hey guys, getting significant CPU change with the Wow and Flutter...

Saving about 2% CPU on My Intel QuadCore if the W&F knob is set to minimum.
Can someone confirm?

Every plugin needs a WOW factor to be a winner

Just bought now. I love all of Jeroen's stuff. I bought it sight unseen. I have all of his stuff and I've never been disappointed. Also, the comment's here help. He also prices his plugins at a total no-brainer price.

wow, this thing is thick on drums. didn't try anything else yet, but I surely will.

I like it on guitar busses best so far.

Now that I learned all parameters and their behaviors I think I can comment a bit.

Like any real tape it breaks easily if it's driven so I wouldn't hit it too hard in busses and most importantly, in the Master Buss. I tried different levels and found its sweet spot around -9dB/-6dB. More than that and it squashes the mix too much for my taste (mixes with a level around 0dBVU and ReelBus' level around -9dB/-6dB). The overbias is brilliant, much better than Kramer's just because it is variable. Using the Professional -30IPS model with an overbias around 10 o'clock does the job for me in most mixes I tried it on. I like the fact I can control how it does react to highs by tweaking the overbias and the saturation, that makes it very versatile. The asperity noise is also unique and nice but even at -20dB it is very noticeable. I wish I could disable it completely (not that it hurts the mix but it makes it a bit grainy). The circuit clip is still a mystery to me and I have to give it a proper listen during the week (sometimes it softens transients and sometimes it makes them sound harsh and "clicky", even in similar mixes). I didn't test the W&F because I dislike wow and flutter so I kept it all the way down in all my tests.

I like it a lot, it's a great tone shaper. I'm pretty sure I'll round up things faster with it. The low end with this thing is solid and tight, love that.

Agreed on the asperity noise thing! It's indeed a very important part of the tape "sound" and character but I do wish I could dial it down even further.

Cheers!

I plan on demoing eventually, but I'm curious to hear from those who've tried both how this compares to FerricTDS. My studio is primarily freeware, but I'd be tempted to purchase ReelTape if it is a noticeable step up.

Also, does the tape noise blank on silence or is it omnipresent? I suppose I could always gate it if necessary but I'm curious if the plugin handles this internally. Or would that diminish the authenticity factor?

Seriously though, the demo is not obtrusive in any way that I can tell.

I tried it, but I found the CPU usage much too high.
Shoot me, but I stay with the good old Magneto.

Time to upgrade the ol' hardware, perhaps? ;-)

If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Post

I did mention I noticed a significant cpu usage with it. Not everyone can afford to upgrade!

magneto?! - this person is, as David St. Hubbins has said, "taking a piss on us" ---has to be - there is no way he/she is serious. upgrade? upgrade to EMU PARIS? I've got some ultrafunk plug-ins for you to try...best things yet!

I'm surprised at how many people complain about CPU usage when it's 2012 and CPU power is incredibly cheap. Sometimes it's a case of optimizing code, but I'll just say what I think a lot of others will agree with:

I'd rather have high CPU and great sound than low CPU and 'meh', and don't consider ReelBus CPU usage as problematic even if it was twice as much.
