It wasn't directed at you. It was directed at the fact that talking about some of these things is going to get all "get off my lawn" and I don't wanna go there. I think I suck most of the time, but I can't stop making music even if I tried.
Sometimes I think my life would be better off if my passion was being a lawyer or a doctor.
but no, I want to make awesome music. I also want to make music that I want my target audience to like.
If they don't like it, I have to be honest... I feel I missed the mark.
Of course not everyone will like your music. The more obscure it is, the less wil apreciate it. But there is an audience for all types of good music.
An example is this. Throughout time, one of my favorite albums is Confessions of a Knife by the Thrill Kill Kult.
Most people hate it, but I think it's great.
In my opinion two the best songs ever created are "The death of Jack the Ripper", and "I love you in your Tragic Beauty"
They dont' fit the mold for pop music.
I had a girlfriend who always listend to top 40 radio, and it seriously drove me crazy. It made every hair on my neck stand up.
The moral of the story is this... do you like it? Do you think it's up to snuff? If not, then take a listen to Ara.

In answer to the original Q - I don't really care - I try to enjoy the buzz I feel when working on a project in the studio and I'm swimming in the thick of my own delusion where everything about what I'm doing is so remarkably good & energizing that it gives me goosebumps - some people call this a Flow state - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)

I haven't read the whole thread, but one thing I'd say is that your friends not being terribly interested in your music is probably par for the course. I've only one friend who's really interested in what I do and that's because he's my only friend who is as crazy about music as I am, despite not being a musician himself. One of my friends plain refuses to listen to my stuff because he's worried he won't like it!
