Besides recording the headphone out - any app that can record whatever audio is playing? Guessing this is unlikely since it would open up the possibility of captured copyrighted audio streams, but figured I'd ask.

Oh - and without jailbreaking.

The Props didn't build it with that sort of functionality. You could always record the speaker output using a microphone if you want to go a little 'primitive'.

I know the Props didn't build it with the functionality. Since iOS devices have been out for a few years, I figured someone may have come up with a solution for this already.

I spose rather than primitive I should go vintage and record it straight into an SP-1200.

Well, a slightly creative workaround (if you happen to have a Mac and some software) - if not - sorry!

On a Mac, run Airfoil speakers (utility available from rogue amoeba). This will let you use the mac as an Airplay device - similar to the Apple TV.

On the same Mac, run Audio Hijack (also from Rogue Amoeba) to "hijack" or capture the Airfoil speakers.

On the iPod/iPhone, set the Airplay to the Mac. Play back your loop while "Hijacking" the Airfoil application.

You can save the captured audio to a lossless file and you aren't going through the noisy analog.

Granted, this requires some software (Airfoil and Audio Hijack). Might be more trouble than you want to take but I've done it for a few programs with good results.

It doesn't work well for anything that you play "live" due to the latency but with playback of something on the device, that isn't really an issue.

BINGO - that's what I'm talking about, a proper workaround with the added benefit of having a lossless file on the machine I'd actually use the audio on. Thanks!

Cool. You do still have to have some utility to capture the audio stream while it is playing. There are a few alternatives to Audio Hijack I think as well.

I use this for some programs that do a lousy job of bouncing to WAV files (such as Aurora). It sounds better catching the stream as it plays.

I have also resorted to the wire in the past - use a very low volume level, bring it up in your DAW and use a noise gate to clean it up.

I suspect that future releases will provide audio copy paste or some alternative - at least I hope so!

Glad it worked for you! My only minor gripe with Airplay on the Mac is that is has a high latency so if you want to play on the iPad and hear it live on the Mac, it is next to impossible - the latency there is around 1 second or more (probably due to the way Airfoil buffers).

Interestingly, the latency on the Apple TV is much lower so they must be doing something clever there.

The latency is a minor gripe - until the Props add the save/export functions they've mentioned (see the other Figure thread here) I'm happy I can record & create loops out of my noodlings. I'm curious to try the Reflections app and see if the latency is any better (plus I think it's $10 less than the full version of Airfoil).
