Oh yes. I'd type in acapella in search and see what you get. It will be a lot of crap. There's a lot of 'worst American idol' type singers on there, but once in awhile you hear someone with that something special. All you can do is ask.

Yup, yup, yup and yup, though the tagging and searching needs an update.

There's no better place to locate old musicians from your past and collaborate with them, or meet new ones for collaboration. Lately, I'm being asked by people to do lead work for them and I have to turn some of them down so I can continue to do other things like have a "life."

Soundcloud got a big spam problem.

The people spam everyone without checking who the person is and what he/she does.

For example: I just upload demosongs of my sample packs there and got many comments with "listen to my songs" or even incoming tracks.

I'm not a label, i'm not a dj. So the tracks are totally wrong in my mailbox.

I like soundcloud, I never really tried any of the other ones. MySpace made no sense to me personally and was just one big mess that I never got my head around. I know there are plenty of alternatives such as what has been mentioned along with bandcamp, reverbnation plus others I can not recall the names of but a proper simpleton like me can use soundcloud and in that respect it get full marks from me/my very humble honest opinion.

I have not put hardly anything up on it yet despite having an account for awhile...I did not read the small print or 'how to' things, Like usual I uploaded what I have onto there so far as 24-Bit/48kHz .WAV files and they all sound odd (one even is Mono i think) played back on the free account. So Thank you to whomever it was for mentioning the quality it plays back at as now I know what to aim for when doing a render for uploading to soundcloud

If I want to send .WAV files then I use mediafire as that is alright for free but it does not let/act as a streaming player for audio but again for free its very fair and can not complain + the simpleton part is same

SoundCloud is not the new MySpace IMO. SC is good for musicians/producers/DJs who want to network with other musicians/producers/DJs, but it's very hard to reach a broader audience. The ability to embed the player on other social network sites (e.g., FaceBook) is very cool, but that whole paradigm is not as effective for reaching a larger audience as MySpace was in its heyday.

As for the comments, I'm not one to solicit many comments on my songs, nor do I spend much time commenting on others. I have a roughly even number of followers/following, and I do listen to a lot of music when I'm at work, but I rarely comment and I"m not into the whole "you comment for me, then I'll comment for you" game. I think the in-line commenting is a novel idea, but I also find it annoying sometimes for a reason not mentioned thus far - I hate it when I post a song that has been released through a label, and people start commenting on it as if it's a work-in-progress. I've actually had people tell me things like "...you should send this song to [insert label], dude!!! when commenting on songs that were posted by the label that the song is already signed to.

This is my take, too. I like the player for its functionality on iPhone Safari, as well.

It's a convenience, nothing more.

It is getting worse for musicians the more it becomes like a social site.

That said, I think it is a fantastic service.
The free accounts are pretty generous, and the paid ones are not too pricey, imo.

The social aspect is only meaningful when it is other musicians being social. When I get followed or comments from someone and I see that they have no music, its not meaningless, but it is different and fans are not the primary reason I am on SoundCloud.

I dont think you can restrict user comments, but you can make tracks private so that only your collaborator can see them. That is a very nice function, and there is a whole lot of stuff that goes on that way. You can even 'refresh' the files, so the link stays the same as you trade off.

The social hyping will kill it, imo.

Isn't it easier to send even bigger files (as .WAV) with SKYPE? Or does it take too much time?

This is exactly what I liked on MySpace - it was a social network not only for the musicians, but first of all for the fan base. On one side there was the party folk (with personal accounts) and on the other side there were the musicians, DJ's and bands (with musician accounts). And both of them were able to connect each other.

But then came the new My[]...and it was an absolute flop. On day I visited my MySpace site and the layout was gone away. And I got an email with "We have deleted your layouts because of our new MySpace". So I made another layout, but My[] was never ever so good as years ago.

And now I'm thinking of deleting my MySpace account. But what's the alternative? Is there a social music network which connects the fan base and the musicians together as it was MySpace? (Facebook isn't for me.)

You can upload and download wavs from SoundCloud.
Its only the streaming that is encoded.

That is not what SoundCloud was initially intended to be. It is a shame that that is what it is becoming imo. Why is FB not the ultimate tool for this kind of fake fame grabbing shit?

Thats because the idea is not that you get as many as you can....

And that's not what SoundCloud should become.

First it was a hosting service for audio files, wasn't it?

And now it additionally seems to be a service for collaborations between musicians. This would be a reason for me to make an account at SoundCloud - to work together with other musicians. I wouldn't create an SoundCloud account to connect with the audience.

I think it's the only way people have listened to what I have to (musically) say. So instead of making something only for myself I'll get, what, 10 views a week.

To correct some mis-posts here...

You can remove any posts on your page, any posts you make on any page, and you can mute anybody. The only thing you can't do is prevent someone from following you. But if muted they cannot post comments.

I like sharing my music with listeners and hearing what they have to say about my music. I also enjoy hearing new music and being able to discuss it with the musicians. Imagine!

And there's never been a better way to collaborate, though these days lots of antisocial musicians just sit in their little home studio and play with themselves in a rather self-centric and limiting fashion, so collaboration's not so popular with them...
