again - to compare you need the models of the drives inside the enclosures.. it would take a little digging by you..

1.0TB Seagate Barracuda for the OWC (That was easy)

Now for the Glyph GPT 50... I will probably have to E-mail Glyph, because I can't find any information. I wonder if this indicates trustworthiness...

Also, the Glyph has a "Oxford 924 bridging chip for optimized use with Pro Tools" and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I use Cubase, not Pro Tools.

All right then; I am discussing internal drives with enclosures with many people, and I am eharing multiple confusing ideas, that 7200 rpm isn't necessary because fw800 won't be able to transfer quickly enough to begin with, etc.

I'm getting slightly fed up with myself for not finding something already. Is there not a tried/proven formula for external storage in the music business? Is there not some Western Digital Drive + Enclosure combination that would serve my needs?

Post

Actually does anyone HAVE the Glyph drive? No one seems to know what hard drive is inside it, and I'm not receiving any responses from customer service.

Post

7200rpm is preferable to 5200rpm in a lot of situations - using fw800 you would notice a difference..

Okay, so the primary issue, yet again, is figuring out which drive to get, or which internal drive/enclosure.
Could someone please help me put an end to this horrible search? (It has lasted for a few months already.)

Transfer rate is not why you get a 7200rpm drive. The random access time is why you get a 7200rpm drive. And pulling random samples off the drive involves some random access. Which is why I love pulling Kontakt samples off the SSD.

WD doesn't make an external enclosure with FW800. Nothing stopping you from buying a suitable enclosure and the WD drive of your choice.

From here it says: "Glyph uses only Seagate hard disk mechanisms. Seagate drives live up to their reputation for performance, quality, and durability."
perception: the stuff reality is made of.

they are all very equal - it is basically a cable with a plastic shell - what matters is the drive itself - 64mb cache is not a prerequisite for a fast drive - 7200rpm is a factor though - don't look at 5400rpm drives..

if you raced them for performance your choices would likely finish neck and neck.. it is very difficult to say how loud each drive is.. you'll have to find that out for yourself - the chances of someone here reading this and owning one of those enclosures is very small.. you could go to a tech forum such as xbitlabs.com - but, i would say just get the one that makes sense to you - either 64mb for performance or 32mb for quiet operation..

Post

It's funny because I hear that Seagate drives are actually among the worst of their kind.

As for choosing a drive, I have no knowledge whatsoever when it comes to that. This is what I need help with... I need a tried and true formula that'll work because I'm not sure what loud is, and how much better the 64mb will be.

I apologize for my indecision, it's very annoying, I know.

predicting hard drive failure is like predicting a car crash - WD and Seagate each ship about 800,000,000 drives a year - some break.. you do the math..

Post

I'm less worried about failure than about poor quality. I can get a replacement drive under warranty if something goes wrong.

Post

the major players - WD, Seagate, Hitachi, SAMSUNG, and Toshiba all make good drives.. i prefer WD.. as long as you buy from one of those guys it should be quality and last 10 years..

Post

Okay, but I know nothing about enclosures, nor do I know if the already-built external enclsoure + drive products are good for my purposes.

Post

external drives are great.. my friend has like 8..

but, again, i don't know if this is going to fix the original issue of samples playing back wrong..

I recorded myself waiting for all of my instruments to load and so on, so if anyone is interested in seeing my problem, go ahead and watch this:

(around 13 minutes in I suppose)

I think it's a combination of RAM and CPU issues to be honest. I guess the macbook pro isn't very good, and I'm doomed. I just want to make some music and I'm stuck with this silly thing!!! WHY? Why do good computers have to cost 4-5 thousand dollars?!
