The audio quality and video quality themselves are not too great, but you should get the idea.

I really think that the solution to my problem amy be to get a new -desktop- computer...but Apple doesn't have any family plan for paid installments, and I know nothing about building my own PC.

This is a horrible debacle it seems.

your problem i think lies in that you are trying to do an extremely high number of samples simultaneously - you could do that on a modern desktop, but even a 2012 Macbook would probably choke on that number of different banks loaded at the same time - right now, i think your solution is to bounce to audio now and then so that you only have 2 or 3 large libraries loaded at any one time.. i think that my system could do what you are trying to do, but it would not be happy and it would indeed take 3 minutes to load up..

you might consider getting more, faster RAM if possible on your laptop, but disk access is not going to smooth out your workflow any i don't think..

Systems that would handle your requirements are under two thousand from ADK, who specialize in audio/video systems built to your specs. They guarantee low latency DAW performance.
And they offer leasing options too. Worth a look, if you don't mind using an OS from the former evil empire. :D

Ugh, that's all gibberish to me. How would I know what to pick?

Well anyway, I'd go with Windows 7 64 Bit, and I run Cubase 6.

It looks that with the current budget though, I am in no position to buy anything like this. I'm pretty much doomed. :( Music composition isn't fun if I have to work around everything.

You could just email them and explain your needs. But, if you're working with a no-budget budget it does limit the options.

So, I am really not sure what to do, but I'm leaning towards the Glyph drive for right now. How easy is it to transfer data from the original glyph drive to a theoretical replacement?

Also, thanks for the link to the custom PC build site, but I'd need some real guidance before trying to assemble my own device.

Post

i really don't think that it will help the situation - you might should save your money toward a real solution.. again - more, faster ram would likely help..

Post

I'm sorry, but the macbook pros only have 8GB RAM maximum, and I'm not sure how I'd go about replacing it altogether for faster RAM, if that's possible.

Besides, I need a hard drive before I run out of space anyway...I doubt I real solution would come. In case you're wondering, here are the specifications of my RAM:

2 x 4 GB
Type: DDR3
Speed: 1067 MHz

Post

all of the new Macbook Pros have 4gb DDR3 1333.. so it is possible that you could get 1333..

$50 for 8gb.. :) makes me want to check my own RAM situation..

Post

My macbook pro is from mid 2010---I doubt it could handle the new RAM/be compatible with it.

Post

ok.. darn - it looks like there is no ram upgrade.. huh...

Post

Thank you APPLE!!!

Hence why I might consider a Windows PC, but I'd come back here and ask for professional advice so that I could assemble a great machine at a decent price.

Post

my only point right now is that you really, really like to tax your system by loading that many sample banks at the same time.. i just avoid that kind of thing.. i will use synthesized instruments very much in my work and if i want to use samples, i generally only select one or two banks to load - i don't like having to wait 3 minutes to load my project either..

have we talked about SSD? they give a VERY REAL boost above your current hard disk.. i installed one the other day and that PC boots in 20 seconds.. all apps load lightning fast..

Post

SSDs become less realistic when I do need at least 500GB of space. Glyph is working on some sort of external SSD drive, bbut I don't know how far THAt would take me.

...I dislike synthesized sounds for the most part...even the default HALion Sonic SE synth that came with Cubase causes problems after a long while so...
