The good thing about Pattern Arp is that I would generally use that very early in a project to get some semi-random patterns laid out, so I can easily export the midi from Reaper then just import into S1 and continue on my merry way if Rewire proves in any way a drag.
EDIT: I guess I'd have to do that, while Reaper opens nicely, no VSTi except for the native ones in Reaper are available in Rewire mode. So anyhow....

Yeah I wrote it off as 'unusable' on my current system for CPU reasons last time I tried it but they must have fixed somethinghibidy wrote:Yeah, if I could use S1, it would be my main squeeze almost certainly.
The improvements in version 2 are substantial.

I'm of two minds over it. A) There is something I'm doing wrong. ALMOST all signs point to it. There is just no way so many people could be using it and my kick ass system just falls over dead with it. B) There are however many of the same complaints I've had, though I gave up so not sure if they ever got resolved. Kontakt, predator and just about anything 3rd party with an arpeggiating line wouldn't work at all. NI told me to kiss off, presonus tried working with me but grew tired of me, realized it worked for most people and moved onbraj wrote:Yeah I wrote it off as 'unusable' on my current system for CPU reasons last time I tried it but they must have fixed somethinghibidy wrote:Yeah, if I could use S1, it would be my main squeeze almost certainly.

Anyways, I keep hoping I'll find that magic moment when I can use it

I haven't tried Kontakt player yet, better do that
Yikes, no NI stuff was seen by the VST search, I wonder what is wrong, is it because NI's stuff lives in its own directory? How do you get it to find it all? The Pro version even comes with Kontakt Elements.

Well, the results are the same. But they are just different types of plugins. Some hosts will load MIDI plugins that their sole purpose is to interpret or create MIDI signals and notes. Catanya and others are just VST plugins that can output MIDI. No real difference except for format. S1 can use any plugin that outputs MIDI as a source for other tracks.braj wrote:
I'm a little confused regarding 'midi plugins' ie. exactly what is the difference between them and Catanya for example?
To put it simply, in Studio One, only tracks that output audio appear in the mixer. In other words, anything that could be considered an output. You won't find MIDI-only tracks in the mixer because they aren't outputting any sound. But if you place an instrument on the MIDI track, each OUTPUT from that instrument will appear in the mixer. Not the original MIDI track, but the OUTPUTS. So this could be the output of a track, or the individual outputs of a virtual instrument, or whatever. The mixer basically represents all sources of actual audio in your project.I also get a bit confused about how the tracks relate in the timeline vs. the mixer, in Reaper they are all 1 for 1 so I need to get used to that. I know a lot of people say Reaper's UI is confusing but I am really comfortable with it for the most part.
Make sense? It wasn't a great explanation, sorry.

So I just copied NI's VST plugins to my main VST directory and it all works just fine. Whew!

I know the thread title is "strengths", but I personally do NOT like the way tracks/fx are done in the mixer. I also don't like the key commands (they seem very awkward compared to most hosts I've used.

I'm actually loving/hating the way effects are in the mixer, mostly loving though as in Reaper I always struggled with getting a good size that displayed enough of the track view without being too wide in the mixer. So though it isn't perfect in a way it is better for me. I am liking the built in effects as well so that helps because of their custom mini controls. And from what I understand the key commands are based on Logic and ProTools? and you can modify them, so not a big deal for me.hibidy wrote:I know the thread title is "strengths", but I personally do NOT like the way tracks/fx are done in the mixer. I swear there is a lot of voodoo involved with CPU use, when I first tried S1 Diva would gasp just to play anything, now one of my favorite presets Bud Pluck which was barely playable in Reaper in really really smooth in S1. I really don't get it.

I don't either. Though I'm OUT of "that" other thread, it's still a huge mystery to me. I can only go by what is happening here. However, I don't use diva (frankly, I've never heard anyones examples that have inspired me
)
@mixer/S1: I'm the opposite. I hate the way fx are listed in the mixer and love on the fact that they are just at the top of the per-item track. In S1, they are to the side........significantly more distracting to me.
Now, in the reap, you have allot of docking options which are dreamy to me BUT if I'd like a full FX window I can just double-click and walla....there it is. But I can still unfloat it and have it docked if I wish (one of the reasons I like x64 native and not bridged!)

Yeah I just have struggled with 'should I display the inserts, the FX controls, should I use this skin, or that one, that mixer default, or that one...what to do, what to do...' kind of drove me batty
On the side isn't so ideal for me either, but at lest I can get to them easy enough. It's a tradeoff either way really. Studio one has one button click to put them over the mixer, and the mixer can also float. I dunno, nothing is perfect.
Regarding Diva, I really love the sound, no softsynth has quite the same 'feel' when playing from my experience, it is subtle and I really like the electric piano-type sounds, clavs and stuff, plus the organs, for what I do it is really wonderful, but I can see how it like anything else isn't for everyone. I had a Juno long ago so it kind of takes me back too
EDIT: oh the info panel is really cool for displaying the active track controls, I can make the actual track faders small and instead of clicking the smaller arrow to expand a track, just click the track and it gives a nice long-throw fader and more controls than you can get when it is on the side.
