I'm in for the box set myself.

Agreed! Turrican I took a lot more effort to complete. I believe, if I recall correctly, I completed Turrican II on the first play-through, it was that easy... at least for me. If not, it was certainly during my first sitting with it.Compyfox wrote:Man, this is so long ago since I played Turrican on C64 (Turrican 1 sure was hard compared to Turrican 2).
Don't be sad. It wasn't that great. I played it on the Amiga. I played Turrican I, II and 3 on the Amiga and Super Turrican I and II on the SNES, and it was only the first two that held my interest.Sadly Turrican 3 never hit another platform other than Amiga and MegaDrive. The SNES version was shite IMO and everything else... - sadly that never got a copy of Turrican 3 on MegaDrive (Sega Genesis).
You got any links for it? I got the Turrican OST, but wasn't aware of a second OST release? Even Chris' page only shows one Turrican release? Or is this from another artist I'm guessing?I also still remember the day I bought the Turrican 2 OST at a shopping mall in my hometown.
Where are you seeing that? The webpage says1) There will be remade/remastered (and I therefore fear uberloud) songs. While I don't necessarily have a problem with that, why not collect everything that was available already, put it on the CDs and be done with it.
The idea behind this is an epic limited edition box set of at least three CDs, which will feature almost every melody from the saga in newly arranged and recorded versions
Well, ya, considering the project is by Hulsbeck, I'd expect only Hulsbeck material. If this was being done by Rainbow Arts/Factor 5 or by someone else, yes, I'd expect something else. That's just me.2) It will only be Huelsbeck songs. There is no mention of songs "ported" or even written by Ramiro Vaca, Markus Siebold (I loved the Turrican 2 C64 OST!), Stefan Hartwig and Michael Hendriks. Also no info regarding various available remixes from AmigaRemix days or even Scooter's "Freedom" remix called "Level One". I know that my stab at a Turrican remix won't be on there, it was a WIP. But well - Turrican's soundtrack was not Chris Huelsbeck alone.
The webpage says it'll have orchestral tracks, but that'll only be the bonus material and quoting from the webpage3) I still think that an orchestra version sounds good, but kind of kills the bite of the Turrican OST. But it's Chris' hobby-horse now and if it's mostly the symphonic parts, why not. Unless it's a techno-orchestra mix.
While this box set is bound to please every synthesizer music fan out there, new bonus recordings with the WDR Radio Orchestra are also lined up for the project
It will be at least 3 CD's, again quotingA couple of good things:
a) It will be three CDs. Could be more IMO, but at least it's not "just" two CDs. A DVD recording of the orchestra would be nice on top of it. I know it was recorded a couple of times, but there is no access.
If it goes beyond $75k, he's saying there will be more music. The idea behind this is an epic limited edition box set of at least three CDs,
Might have nothing to dowith synSONIQ, and the material hasn't even been started on either.b) it will be shipped from Germany. For once, no shipping fees. Though I'm somewhat p***ed that I was not informed of this sooner by synSONIQ (I know someone who works there)
No idea. I would think that would be more up to whomever owns the IP for Turrican at this point? Chris is a musician and programmer for music software, but no idea how much further he could take it though?c) Maybe this revives the interest on Turrican to rerelease the games on newer platforms (Arcade DLC's seem to be the rage), maybe even create an official 2.5D sequel (along with Katakis and X-Out). The CHIP Germany magazine for example recently sold an issue with Turrican 1 and 2 on it, including an emulator. I'd also love to play the PC version again (can't anymore due to newer rigs). But personally I still love the design and soundtrac of the C64 versions.
I think there was a lot of Walform Microwave on there as well. One thing I hope one way or another is to hear lots of Kurzweil, Roland XV and SQ80 sounds on the OST. And by lots I mean all over the place!
Did you ever hear the Turrican OST on CD? Going back and listening to the original on the Amiga and the CD release, the CD was much better, and prefer it over the original music from the game. He's saying the tracks will be newly arranged, so here's hoping 20+ years of more musical experience really comes through as well.Sendy wrote:These will have to be VERY good to be better than the originals. I find remakes with modern gear just hardly ever cut it, no matter who makes them. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing, but objectively I think it's more than that. These tracks were as good as they could have been, were created for a certain instrumentation (Paula's four channels), and were inspired by this sound in such a way that the sound complimented the composition.
Turrican 3 also looked more comic-like compared to it's predecessors.DevonB wrote:Don't be sad. It wasn't that great. I played it on the Amiga. I played Turrican I, II and 3 on the Amiga and Super Turrican I and II on the SNES, and it was only the first two that held my interest.
No, you're absolutely right, there is just this CD called "Turrican", but the music is basically from Turrican 2 (Amiga) and some Turrican 1 and 3, so is the logo of the CD (both C64 and Amiga version). It's still branded into my head that it's Turrican 2.DevonB wrote:You got any links for it? I got the Turrican OST, but wasn't aware of a second OST release? Well, there you have it: newly arranged and recorded. So there will be rerecordings and remasterings as well. Chris probably still has the original files and some of the hardware. Why should he not throw old stuff on there (not only to save time and work) and offer new material on top of it? Isn't this what an Anthology is about?DevonB wrote:Where are you seeing that? The webpage saysThe idea behind this is an epic limited edition box set of at least three CDs, which will feature almost every melody from the saga in newly arranged and recorded versions
It's called "Anthology". I somewhat expect all Turrican songs in such a collection and not just selected one from Amiga/PC days. Don't get me wrong here, I respect Huelsbeck's work, but to my knowledge Turrican had a far better success on Comodore C64 than on Amiga. This shows by Zack McKrakken, Turrican 1 and Turrican 2 being 3 years in an exchanging top3 chart placed state back in the days. Amiga had a bigger game selection.DevonB wrote:Well, ya, considering the project is by Hulsbeck, I'd expect only Hulsbeck material. The question is, how much will be orchestra, how much will be synthesizer. I remember interviews with Chris that he'd love to completely go Orchestra at some point. His last projects were also Orchestra for various live performances.DevonB wrote:The webpage says it'll have orchestral tracks, but that'll only be the bonus material and quoting from the webpageWhile this box set is bound to please every synthesizer music fan out there, new bonus recordings with the WDR Radio Orchestra are also lined up for the project
Again, I'll believe it when i see it. But $75k USD is not much if you need to take several things into consideration:DevonB wrote:It will be at least 3 CD's, again quotingIf it goes beyond $75k, he's saying there will be more music. The idea behind this is an epic limited edition box set of at least three CDs,
synSONIQ is the main distributor of Huelsbeck's recordings. At least up until now and the final product will be shipped from Germany. So I expect that synSONIQ is involved.DevonB wrote:Might have nothing to dowith synSONIQ, and the material hasn't even been started on either.
Well I still remember certain audio projects spawning enough interest for the firms to jump back in and resell their products. Most noticable for example is the "Street Fighter 2 HD" project. IIRC, the music was in the works by several remix communities, then Capcom came along and got some of these musicians on board for their release. Chrono Symponic also made a considerable impact on Square-Enix IIRC (at least with the game developers). The game was later rereleased on Nintendo DS due to popular demand.DevonB wrote:No idea. I would think that would be more up to whomever owns the IP for Turrican at this point? Chris is a musician and programmer for music software, but no idea how much further he could take it though?
Could be, don't have exact data on the synths anymore. But I know for sure that his main synths on Turrican were a Kurzweil K2500 (IIRC) and a SQ80 hardware synth. He even made A/B demos with SQ8L compared to the hardware where he used signature sounds from Turrican.DevonB wrote:I think there was a lot of Walform Microwave on there as well. One thing I hope one way or another is to hear lots of Kurzweil, Roland XV and SQ80 sounds on the OST. Far as I see, we wont' be charged until it hits 75k or June 6th? Not sure, but I know I have no charges on my card at this point, and it says it won't charge until he reaches the goal. An email from Amazon said it's open from now until September for it to possibly do a payment. There we have what? I'm completely confused how you translate newly arranged and recorded to mean it'll be a remaster of old tracks? Please explain? I'm not seeing anywhere or even a mere hint that this will be a re-release of any "old" material outside of the fact that it's the melodies from Turrican? In fact, teh site says "Even music pieces that were featured on the 1993 Turrican Soundtrack CD will be newly recorded and arranged to update their sound." That doens't sound like re-release of the old material at all.Well, there you have it: newly arranged and recorded. So there will be rerecordings and remasterings as well. Never played the C64 version, but did pull it up on YouTube. Wow, it is drastically different. Didn't realize that. The C64 versions were also more "dark" due to the lack of music compared to Amiga (and IMO also better to play). I know, it was a memory issue, but still the game was initially made for C64. The rest is personal opinion though.
Oh, I know that's not much money. The man needs to make a living too, just like the rest of us as well as pay for it all.Again, I'll believe it when i see it. But $75k USD is not much if you need to take several things into consideration:
a) some music needs to be composed (the time needed wants to be compensated since you can't work on other things)
b) the orchestra needs to be paid
c) you have to pay the mastering and pressing of the CD in advance
d) Merchandise and promotion
In 6 days since it started on April 15th, it's up to $54k. Not too shabby I'd say. I think it'll make it.I'm sure tha the $75k is already a tight budget. I don't know if there is room for more. Last time I checked we're at about 43k and time is running out. Are there really that much fans out there to back that?
DevonB wrote:No idea. I would think that would be more up to whomever owns the IP for Turrican at this point? Chris is a musician and programmer for music software, but no idea how much further he could take it though?Still depends who owns the IP. No idea if Manfred sold it or not to someone else?I wouldn't take that lightly. Retro games are popular and such a CD project would respawn a certain interest. Factor 5 (now part of THQ IIRC) would be stupid to not jump on this. And I still say the old developers still have a saying in this as well.
BTW:
Just checked, we're beyond 50grand now. Since it's still running 44 days, I hope "Kickstarter" doesn't cap at 75k and the deals are gone (can't pledge atm, no funds due to end-of-month issues). Then again, if it goes throught he roof, I kind of hope to see "more" than what is offered at this point. Like I said, I've been involved with other projects where I paid just as much and was credited in the process as bonus.
To me it does.DevonB wrote: There we have what? I'm completely confused how you translate newly arranged and recorded to mean it'll be a remaster of old tracks? Please explain? The Amiga version is too "lively", too friendly IMO. I remember that it was really made for C64 in the first place, then ported.DevonB wrote:Never played the C64 version, but did pull it up on YouTube. Wow, it is drastically different. Didn't realize that.
I think the initial game still belongs to Manfred Trenz and THQ only had parts of the franchise. Then again, I think they own Factor5 as sub division (hence Tunnel B1 released through THQ). Even so, it's been over a decade since Turrican 3D was announced (codename "Hurrican") - licenses can shift.DevonB wrote: Still depends who owns the IP. No idea if Manfred sold it or not to someone else?
I mean what if it reaches 75k - is it over then or does it go higher? I remember that Freddie Wong's "Video Game High School" or Wayside Creations "Fallout: Nuka Break" kickstarter projects well exceeded their goals and were then capped at the final date. I sure hope this is the case with Huelsbeck's Turrican Anthology.DevonB wrote: Far as I see, we wont' be charged until it hits 75k or June 6th? You know, I'm hearing you, I'm understanding what you're saying. I'm just saying nothing on the page indicates your theory.Compyfox wrote: To me it does.
Look at it from this point of view:
a) Chris has all the master files, or at least the MIDI stuff. I would only be logical to go from there
b) on the other hand however, I would love to hear the "originals", not rerecordings. This isn't an AC/DC album or stuff from the Sex Pistols. We're talking about a 20 year old videogame with a soundtrack that was released in the 90ies already.
If anything, I'd at least throw that one in there as bonus. Why go the route again to rerecord. This isn't a remix project.
Can you point me to a few of your favorite tracks from the original for the C64 from YouTube? I'd like to hear 'em.The Amiga version is too "lively", too friendly IMO. My guess is he'll let it go to June 6th and let it runs its course, based on this quote from the siteI mean what if it reaches 75k - is it over then or does it go higher? To me, it really doesn't matter. I fund all kinds of things, and I don't expect credit for supporting it. Of course it's about the fans, just like any other musician making a living with his/her work. But they don't thank everying individually for being their CD's either.Still I'm not happy about the deals and credit listing. For 50 bucks, you could expect a name in the booklet. I mean, we fund this thing for pete's sake!
By name, yes. By definition, no.DevonB wrote: I'd also disagree about this not being a remix project; that's exactly what this is. He's taking the original music and making a new mix of the songs. That by its very name is a remix. No?
Since I mostly only played Turrican 2 (and Turrican 1 only once or so), there is not much to find. The game was pretty much BGM-less. At least how I remember it. The only tracks I can remember are from the opening (loading screen), the spaceship battle and I think the final battle also had some BGM.DevonB wrote: Can you point me to a few of your favorite tracks from the original for the C64 from YouTube? He's still bidding too much on the high pledgers and I don't want "orchestra stuff" - this isn't an RPG but a platformer.DevonB wrote: My guess is he'll let it go to June 6th and let it runs its course, based on this quote from the site
"What if we go even higher?
If we get even more supporters and a higher budget, I will add more live orchestra recordings and more music (and expand the Box Set with an additional CD for more tracks). I also have really exciting extra perks for the pledge levels above $50, check them out!"
Of course they don't, then again most of them don't ask their fans for money to fund their CDs.DevonB wrote: To me, it really doesn't matter. Well, it's 4 discs now instead of 3 at least. He plans to master the songs once he's complete, and he's hyper aware of people want dynamics and won't overcompress. I heard him directly say that yesterday on the last hour broadcast he did on justin.tv for the close of the Kickstarter. I'm also interested to see what additional bits he's adding now too since he's more than double his budget now.Compyfox wrote:Ah what the heck, I caved and went for the 50USD pledge. The project is funded (more than twice as much actually) and I really, really hope we get more than what was promised.
Though I've heard the first "finished" track alraedy, and I have a some sort of bad aftertaste in my mouth. It doesn't sound like 90ies music anymore - just... something slammed together and hope to be done.
I really hope the final mix will be polished a bit and not too squashed to ****. It's still half a year until the release.
I don't think it was better, it's just certain artists shine more than others because so much is mediocre. Turrican was catchy with a great melody. My other favorite is the composer from Ys soundtracks, Yuzo Koshiro. Ys Book I and II just drew me in with the fantastic melodies on the TurboGrafx 16 so many years ago.... Probably helped is was one of the first redbook audio soundtracks too. Beyond that, Bjorn Lynne is another favorite, but from thereon out, I don't have one's that really shine as bright.Caine123 wrote:already pre-ordered, need to support such a legend!
game music were much better in the past.
at the original music delivered, isnt it the same when playing the amiga files on a player?
