@tehlord: That is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. The synths I have are going nowhere (I'm working on learning massive better as we speak) but I want that lush soundcasape with the evolving patterns.

Sucks ordering in on a weekend. No worries, I have plenty to keep me occupied until then. And the instructional vids are fab!
Congrats!

I am a Spectrasonics customer since "Atmosphere", to date Omnisphere by far has been the best value for money I ever spent in the music related hardware and / or software department.

You are in for a massive treat!!

I would recommend to start by familiarizing yourself with Live and Stack mode, and start improvising.... BEST FUN you ever had with a synth... I promise.

Omni and Zebra are the most inspiring synths i've ever had. And i play synths since the early 1980s.
Everytime i open Omnisphere and go thru the presets a fine melody comes out almost instantly. Especially the hybrid/psychoacoustic sounds are always a huge source of inspiration to me. Also the pads/arps/rhythmic sounds. The choirs and voices are very musical though not perfect or very natural.

The only two "negative" things about Omnisphere:
1) You really need lots of ram and/or a fast hd/ssd if you want to use it multitimbral
2) After some time playing around with Omni you probably want to have the Moog expansion and Trilian, too.

Here are two examples/demos that come out when i played around with Omni.

Famous Omni lightbulb sound in the intro, then Trilian bass, µtonic drums and some Zebra pad:

Omni belltype sound in intro, bass from Trilian, drums from Stylus RMX, pads from Zebra:

Here's the absolute cheapest I've found it. I order from Juno all the time and they are very good to deal with. The only downside is it's shipped from the UK and that can either be a wait (or not)
Of course there's always the FedEx 2 day option...

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate, from my perspective at least.

I've got an old Q9400 with 8GB RAM on W7-64 and I have some projects with two instances of Omni maxed out (so that's 16 outputs) and 2-3 instances of Kontakt with multi outs as well and although CPU use creeps over 50% it's still more than usable. And that's with a Saffire 6, which hasn't got the most efficient drivers on the planet.

Win7/64 Resource Monitor says:
Opening the first instance of Omni needs 400mb. Every further instance needs another 200mb. Then loading sounds needs extra ram depending on the disk streaming settings in Omni.
Of course it depends which sounds you load. Many of them don't need that much ram. But there are some soundsources with lots of multisamples and round robins or velocity layers. I have some multis which need almost 1 gig for the samples only. But you always can load the light versions via the browser instead if you are running out of ram.

That said, Omni is always rock solid and stable on my daw.

Here's the thing with Ominisphere. It's like an exotic spice collection. Sure, that collection comes with salt and pepper, but you might not find dried garlic or oregano in it. You will find cinnamon, kafir lime leaf and saffron in it... and 8 different rare varieties of them. So it seems expensive for something that doesn't make it into every track, but when you need that special something it's really perfect.

You will absolutely love Omnisphere.

One small alarm bell that went off was the mention of Iris and lack of movement. Omnisphere has lots of patches that evolve by use of LFOs and tempo-synced gates and you an automate the Orb. But in Iris you can use the LFOs and the XY macro pad in very similar ways. They just don't have tempo syncing yet but I'm sure it will come. And the samples in Iris can be quite long--just listen to the patchpool examples. I bought that 15 euro subscription and many of those samples play on and on.

I think Omni and Iris are completely different beasts. I think Iris is about creating your own sounds and Omni is about tweaking ready gorgeous sounds to the needs of your song.

Sounds like an advanced mp3 player to me ;)

I like saffron :-)

This out way out of my price range but very, very cool. Essentially it sounds (from the demos) like a amalgamation of the 'best of' in various synths and sounds stuffed into one package... an uber digital synth.

But i would also consider NI Komplete 8, which is more expensive but you'll get a huge collection of plugs , Kontakt alone would rival Omnisphere and things like Reaktor or battery 3 are plugs that omnisphere doesnt offer , so you have to buy additional plugs if you want that. There was a great combination with Kore2 controller last time , too bad i didnt caught the deal ...
FFS people! Omnisphere is NOT a workstation! Doesn't even come close - comparing it to Kontakt/Komplete is a pointless venture :x

No it's not an MP3 player. It's true though that a lot of the value comes in Spectrasonics' best-of-breed sound design. They make the best sounding presets of any company in the business and thu give you more than you could ever even listen to. Seriously. Huge value there. And the orb, synthesis features, FX, envelopes, etc. let you customize any patch to your needs or evolve it into something completely different.

It's a combination of a synth and a rompler. And it's quite powerful and full featured.

But iris is a new twist on a sound design tool that lets you drag drop any WAV file into it and visually carve out the sound you want based on RX2 tech. Do you want to turn the vocals in your chorus into a cool pad to use in the intro? Iris. Take any sample in your library or any field recording and morph it into something completely different? Iris.

The two are apples and oranges.

I love both. But they have very little in common.

True it doesn't even try to be a sampler. So I still need my Kontakt for traditional instruments. But i own Komplete and Omnisphere and after I bought Omni I almost never use the synths in Komplete. Going back to them is almost always disappointing compared to the sonic bliss I get from Omnisphere.

+1

Same here, about the only thing I use from Komplete is Kontakt.

Don't forget Trilian it is a bass expansion for Omnisphere as well as a stand alone synth.
