hmm, maybe the bass drum needs some slap back delay or a bit more reverb ... i'll try some different processings and different sounds.

thanks again, Slartibartfast!

Big thanks to everyone writing down their thoughts on the entries :hail:
slartibartfast wrote:Strange to say it, in a 30 second track, but I think it would have sounded a bit more complete if you had ended it early (at 0:22)!
... and yet, people have been complaining for years how ridiculously short the 2-minute limit was ...

kryptonaut wrote:Some complex rhythms - I found it a bit difficult to 'lock onto', I think I needed some more obvious cue when the start of a bar happened.
FYI: it's 7-7-7-6
kryptonaut wrote:maybe disorientation was your intention?
No, I just like making weird shit. I don't mind disorientation as a side effect though :hihi:

I'll try to gather some of my thoughts on entries soon!

Post

In keeping with this month's theme I'm reviewing each track in 30 seconds ie in real time while it plays, short but sweet, and if your name takes 25 seconds to type then actually very short indeed

RuediRena - is my computer broken?!!

spirulence - great beat, classic organ/harmonica combo, love the distortion on the harmonica

Emerald Tablet - gentle, nice drum sounds, pretty tune, nice guitar sounds, good ending

nikp2000 - great start, nice soft lead sound, ending less convincing

knockman - great, nice vocal, jump up and down, yay

pljones - nice broody patch but felt there should have been other things going on too

evo2slo - great as always, but volume levels too hot (again! :smack: )

DrApostropheX - love it, used the 30 seconds well, complete and self contained

shrikant - pretty eclectic mix of sounds and harmonies which didn't quite work for me overall I'm afraid

Daniel Pompougnac - brilliant, loved every second

forw - great TV theme music, fits the 30 secs idea well

Mister Natural - nice promising start but probably could have developed more as it progressed

slartibartfast - holy ****, heavy and hot! Good stuff

Laguna Rising - I can see what you're getting at but that time signature is really confusing me, which is good, right?!

beanpole - good use of 30 secs but left feeling not sure about it overall

robojam - nice and gentle

peppy197 - sounds like a nice intro to a longer piece, ends too suddenly

GMoneh - Pink Panther!

farlukar - funky and fab, ends a bit sudden

Patrick9 - happy tune, sad lyrics!

SJMmusic - epic, brooding, did I say epic? yes

DHMiltz - interesting in a good way, are all your instruments broken?

kryptonaut - another great TV theme, fits the 30 secs well

lowcloud - very good, I like this

Cheeso - yes my computer must be broken?!!

1-2-Many - as creepy as I'm sure you intended

inboxzero - mixed too loud but actually quite like this

offthewall - reminds me of Postman Pat driving his van, well played, skillfully constructed

SLD Music - very individual track, you have a great voice

Bjulin - another great piano piece, beautifully played, some interesting progressions

IrionDaRonin - great piece, 17th second is brilliant

liqih - great sounds but ending too sudden

bzur - what a great mix, that bottom end is just soooo impressive

mellotronaut - interesting! I love the high harmonies

Peterhud - Yeah yeah, brilliant, yeah yeah

Vulcandj - highly impressive rockfest

Gorgor..etc - funkin good

mikebenson - fits the 30 secs theme well, a perfume ad soundtrack if ever I heard one, you could sell this and make a fortune!

Votes to follow soon, will be based on completeness within the 30 secs theme, if it sounds like it should continue after the end it won't make the grade!

Good luck to all!

D.H. Miltz wrote:That definition.
So reading the Wiki article, does that mean that unison is OK or truly just one melody line at a time?
slartibartfast wrote:And I would like some clarification regarding which parts of the following sentence from the wiki article are allowed:
If an entire melody is played by two or more instruments or sung by a choir with a fixed interval between the voices or in unison, it is also said to be in monophony
If I interpret this correctly, then any two notes sung at a fixed interval (e.g. octaves, fifths) would also be considered monophonic, so long as the interval does not change throughout the entire track. Am I right?
For the purposes of the contest: Octaves, yes. Other fixed intervals, no. That's why that sentence was excised from the definition given.

I think that answers both questions, but if not, let me know.

Thanks to all for the reviews. I appreciate it.

My humblest of apologies about my entry not adhering to the bit rate standard. I know better... I really do. I've entered the contest before. I just forgot to encode this one correctly this time (spent too much time making sure my naming and tagging was correct, I guess).

I truly apologize, and would understand anyone downgrading me in the voting accordingly.

I didn't have high hopes for my song anyway. There are too many fantastic entries this month for that kind of hubris. :)

Perfectly clear. Thanks.
Time is an illusion - lunchtime doubly so.

Thanks for listening -- robojam has planted some seeds of a further idea...

My brief reviews:

RuediRena - 27 seconds can be a long time

spirulence - great harmonica, very well played and nice distortion

Emerald Tablet - nice mood, don't know about choice of sounds

nikp2000 - melody starts great, a bit too complicated at the end. guit and bass + tremolo sound great

knockman - really nice production, instrumentation and song work well together

pljones - something more needed to keep the listener with your track (me at least)

evo2slo - pretty cool track! nice guit + drums, overcompressed (?)

DrApostropheX - funny

shrikant - the drumbeat is cool in a way but harmonies and melodies are too random for me, I'm afraid

Daniel Pompougnac - cinematic, but gets a little "sloppy"(?)toward the end

Mister Natural - hm..could have developed more as it progressed

slartibartfast - great riff and great guit sound! drum sounds a little weak, combination synth + guit. don't work too well for my ears

Laguna Rising - very original, like it but what has happened to the drums?

beanpole - complete little piece, a bit of tuning of the voice would have been great, delay on drums is a little distracting to me

robojam - good ending

peppy197 - if it would end a few seconds earlier it would sound more complete I think

GMoneh - jaaaazz! I like the raw synth bass sound

farlukar - Yeah, like it! cool sudden ending

Patrick9 - complete little song, drum sounds don't do it for me

SJMmusic - sounds like an excerpt, pretty good orch sounds, very strange vibrato in strings at the end

DHMiltz - fine production, great sounds, interesting, yes.

kryptonaut - video game intro song

lowcloud - little piano idea

Cheeso - : )

1-2-Many - sounds work well together, good clean production

inboxzero - overcompressed/mixed too loud? nice distorted drums

offthewall - brilliant guit sound, well recorded and played, however would have been more clear idea if you decided for melody and comping (little softer in vol. or with rev.), I think

SLD Music - love this one! great melody..my favorite tune this month

Bjulin - 30 sec. impro

IrionDaRonin - great from the moment when the chinese instruments come in

liqih - great solo lines, I like your odd coice of sounds

bzur - good production

mellotronaut - creepy, original, nice

Peterhud - : ) haha, that's cool!

Doc john - good transparent production

Vulcandj - Nice guit playing

Gorgor..etc - nice groove, minimalistic

mikebenson - not really my cup of tea but great production, nice skills, cool voice

I agree on both points. Credit for this idea goes to bzur.
