hi, i need some help please.

i have a Yamaha erg 121 electric guitar and i am going to replace the pickups with custom built picks.

when i took apart the bridge Humbucker pickups, the copper wire is wrapped around Full plastic bobbins. The magnets are inside the plastic.

I though the copper wire should be touching the 6 magnet slugs though ?

as it is, the copper wire does not touch the magnetic poles. Unless the poles are not magnetised. Or indead just metal poles.

Could explain why i could not do any finger tapping with these pickups.

is this normal for all pickups then ?

You need to read about induction.

Coils do not need to physically touch the poles.
It's the interaction of the pole's magnetic fields and the coils that make it work.

cheers, it seems yamaha made a one piece plastic pickup mould for the cheaper guitars.

Just wondering though, when fully wired up, the guitar did not pick up me playing (finger tapping).

it does not register the notes, only when struck ?

would this be to do with having cheap pickups though.

thanks

Also, the wires in the pickups were not wired to the coil, just attached to the coil with black tape.

i'm going to do a complete re-job on them also with 42 gauage copper wire.
