The problem with a shootout is that someone either gets very badly shot up or ends up dead...

We all know that by virtue of the fact that we are supporting Valhalla, that we are withdrawing (get the pun) our support from other developers...

And it's not just because of the flashy Valhalla advertising

Sean doesn't need to pimp his products like other "big" developers do...

He's on a roll because we all have chosen to support his product and it's so cool that he turns arounds and supports us...

That's the way it needs to be done...Repect all around :tu:

The internet has levelled the playing field and it's great that smaller developers can get in there and start competing with the bigger players...

Kudos to Sean for a great product - especially the new LV 426 algorithm - and I hope that he continues to kick the arse of the corporate cowboys until they lose the gunfight and end up in the virtual morgue :)

Naaa

That will make it an UbeRoom. after that will come ShimmeRoom. and Valhalla FREEqueko.

BTW, in the match-up between VRoom and VRoom I choose the latter. why ? sorry, it's a secret. can't tell ya :uhuhuh:

Amateur technicians are assessed by the tools they possess - and the amount of those tools, with an obvious preference to the latest hyped ones.

Brightest to Darkest:

BrightRoom
LargeChamber
LargeRoom
MediumRoom

All 4 of these run at the input sampling rate, so full frequencies up to sr/2. The remaining algorithms are downsampled, so have a cutoff somewhere around sr/4 (actually a little less):

LV-426 (it can get VERY dark, but can also roll off the bottom end, and has a structure that allows high frequencies to hang around for longer if desired)
DarkChamber
DarkSpace
Sulaco
Narcissus
DarkRoom
Nostromo

Dark Room, Narcissus, Nostromo, and LV-426 all have their LATE HighXover/Mult controls located in a place where they roll off the initial tone of the late reverb, so you can dial in a very dark sound if desired. LV-426 does a similar trick with the LATE LowXover/Mult filters, so you can roll of the low end. So, even though LV-426 is downsampled and can roll off the top end, I consider it less dark than Dark Room, Narcissus and Nostromo.

The ones that use grungy vintage-style delay interpolation (adds noise):

DarkRoom
Narcissus
Nostromo

The grainiest one is Nostromo. By a long shot. Narcissus comes in second, with Dark Room somewhat less grainy than Narcissus. LV-426 doesn't have a lot of grain going on.

I had to open up the XCode project to look at the sourcecode for these algorithms to answer these questions. Once you get up to 11 reverb algorithms, it is hard to remember all the details, even if these have all been written within the last 1.5 years.

An interesting historical note: Medium Room is the earliest algorithm, dating from 12/6/2010. It is also my least favorite of the ValhallaRoom algorithms. Large Room, Bright Room, and Large Chamber all date from the first 2 weeks of January 2011. There were a LOT of reverb algorithms created around the same time period, but the vast majority of them were rejected as not being good enough.

One of the unwritten rules of the ValhallaRoom thread (and, indeed, for pretty much any electronic music forum) is that mentions of science fiction movies directed by Ridley Scott are always on topic. One one level, Nostromo, Narcissus, and LV-426 were influenced by Keith Barr's reverb designs, but the creation of these algorithms was also steeped in my excitement about the Prometheus teasers and trailers. Well, here's the best one yet:

It looks INCREDIBLE.

I just realized that Sulaco has a different architecture than the other Alien algorithms, and also came from a non-Ridley Scott directed film.

I only have 1 reverb slot left in ValhallaRoom, so I might have to save this for when Prometheus comes out, and see if there are any good names in the new film. I may have to start putting Blade Runner names in the next plugin, which I am currently calling "ValhallaNext" because I have a REALLY GOOD IMAGINATION.

For those of us watching at home, this rare glimpse behind the DSP developer strategy curtain, confirms our worst fears: development and release of our beloved plugins is at the mercy of Hollywood's development and release schedule. In the future, I will be watching each episode of ET for nuanced messages and secret DSP implications. :D
