How do you record your iPad?

This is probably the wrong way to do it, but I had an old insert (tip ring sleeve) cable lying around (2 x 1/4" to 1/4" TRS) that I slapped a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter onto. I plug the two 1/4" plugs into my firewire audio interface and then the 1/8" plug into the headphones jack on my iPad. So far I haven't blown anything up.

I connect mine to a Zoom H4n via the Camera Connection kit and bring the line outs of the Zoom into my pc soundcard.

I did pretty much the same as DrA. Was so disappointed with the sound quality compared to my regular VSTs that I unplugged and never did it again. Shame really because I actually like the airy fairy way of playing the iPad interfaces for ambient stuff...just (to my ears) sounds crap.

Had in mind to use a few isynths in my hardware setup, but the iPad sounds really cheap next to the others.

Even with the io dock the sound isn't really good, maybe using the spdif from tascam's iu2 could help ?

I find the io dock fine to use. I've used Sunriser, alchemy, ikaossillator, Animoog and a few other app in band practice and for recording to a DAW. I have an iPad running ikaossillator, into the io dock then into a Kaoss pad quad going into either an audio interface for recording or PA for live and it sounds great.

Usually, I record on the iPad and transfer the WAV files wherever possible but many apps make this difficult. I have a slightly crazy method I'm going to experiment with.

I have on my entertainment center a Mac Mini as well as a sound bar that takes audio input.
On the Mac Mini, I run Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba which lets me use it as an airplay device - this gives digital lossless sound from the iPad. I also use Audio Hijack pro to capture the audio to a lossless file (AIFF or WAV) on the Air play.

If I am playing something back on the iPad, this works perfectly, but for live play, there is a 1.5 second latency which makes playing this way almost impossible since you don't hear what you are playing.

I want to try hooking up to a sound device at the same time. My fear is that airplay is an "either/or" and I won't be able to monitor out of the headphone jack while sending sound via airplay. I'll play around a bit and see if it is feasible.

EDIT: As I feared, doesn't work. If there was a way to keep the headphones live while still doing airplay, this would have potential.
