Hi,
Do u know if it's possible to connect 2 iPads together via midi using a cable without using a PC? I want to use a core midi sequencer app (Music Studio) on 1 iPad, with a synth app on the other iPad. I can already do this wirelessly, but I get jitter, dropped & held note problems. Also, I know I could use a PC, but I want to use just ios devices if possible..

Yes you can mate but you will need to think about what midi IO your gonna use - for example I have the M-audio UNO (the one that works!!!) and the CCK to connect it to, but 2 of these wouldn't connect together, as they have midi leads not female midi ports.

Maybe this http://www.ramelectronics.net/music-sou ... 35495.html might allow you to connect cable type midi interfaces together but my midi knowledge has been diminished by VST and I can't remember even basic stuff just lately!!! - I've used adaptors in the past and had no troubles with the little midi adaptors I got with a Creamware card I used for a long time but I can't say for sure if they are 'good practice'. I can't see why it wouldn't work tho.

For some device info have a look at http://iosmidi.com/devices/

Not been updated for a year tho, so check thoroughly before parting with money for anything but you might already have something lying around that is compatible to at least test the theory.

The iConnectMIDI is a MIDI merger/patchbay thing, and it will let you connect two ipads, iphones, ipods, etc... It only comes with one 30 pin apple cable though, so you would want to order a 2nd when ordering the box.

It also has a standard USB port and will become a USB MIDI host for MIDI USB controllers. I use it to get my Akai EWI USB into keyboards without having to use a computer.

It also has two standard 5pin MIDI in/outs.

It is a very cool all-in-one MIDI junction box.

Thanks for the reply guys :)

I should've said that I'd like to connect the iPads passively (no power cable) too if possible, then the Iconnectmidi would be ideal. I was thinking, maybe I could use 2 camera connection kits & connect them together with a USB cable, then that'd be perfect if it worked...anyone know?

Cheers for the reply GB.
Looks like I'll be using a PC till someone releases a simple way of connecting iOS devices passively. Thanks for reading :)

A simple adaptor may come to the rescue:

(looks the same as the adaptor you linked to)

Also worth considering is two Line6 MidiMobilisers with the above mentionned female 5-pole DIN adaptor.

Just tried your suggestion BertKoor & it works very well! And I didn't even have to buy anything new as I had it all laying about :)

What I did was connect my 1st gen Line6 midi mobilizer to my iPad running Music Studio, connected it to my other iPad using an irig midi & a female-female midi adapter, then launched a synth app. I recorded some trills into Music Studio & they played back perfectly in the synth on the other iPad! Very impressed. (Also, I didn't have to use any other bridging type apps to get this to work, just had MS set to output midi to tracks).

So thanks KVR community, & BertKoor, solution assimilated ;)

That's a a damn good idea! Gonna try it as soon as I can.

Thanks!
