I would much rather have a GUI that was functional for working on. The great big sliders and knobs of VRoom are so much easier to grab with the mouse when ones attention is on the sound. I find the smaller knobs and buttons of CSR (and many other GUI's) take too much attention to use in comparison. I love the simple clean uncluttered GUI with big controls.
I hear you on both counts. And I often choose an AT4050 over the Neumann, T-Racks over Waves, and Independence over Kontakt. Sometimes it's about getting a great sound fast, and I know my tools inside and out. But if I don't get clients through the door, it's a moot point. So yes, posh gear brings clients in, and the right gear (regardless of price) keeps them.

And we went thru the same thing at our shop! We now do our 3d animation on a $1600 laptop, while you can't get doorstop money for our 60k of SCSI drives, Silicon Graphics Oxygens and PC render farms! What a world, what a world...

And granted, I've spent some trying moments with Amplitube trying to accurately turn tiny, (yet so realistic) top hat style knobs on an amp sim, but as a guy that used to touch these pieces of industrial art all day, every day, I admit I may be biased. There's a magic to the design of things beyond function alone. And I, for one, miss it badly.

Clean, orderly and predictable may be perfect (no pun intended) for some folks, but my strategy is more oblique!
Where are the chances to over/under rotate a knob, grab the wrong parameter and go wow? Okay, usually ow, but my point is this; Unintended stuff is often the stuff you listen to years later with wonder.

I'm a huge fan of CSR, but now you guys make me want to check out this VROOM. CSR was recently on sale for $49 by the way.
