i just got an ipad,some help needed please;)

just got an ipad 3 today i i have had an iphone a couple of years ago but im a little 'out of it' so here are some questions

1.what are the current best synths/daws etc,im aware of a few(animoog,korg ms20) but i only know a few,i dont know anything about the current best 'daws',audio tools?

2. can i use my alesis q49 midi keyboard to get my ipad into my regular DAW (s1 pro)?

3.the ipad seems to do everything in the world according to the apple salesman,can it teleport me to mars ?

seriously though can my cool friends here point me in the right direction

2. Does it have a regular MIDI-out port? (5-pin din). You can hook up your MIDI keyboard to the iPad using one of the available MIDI interfaces. I use the IK iRig MIDI interface, which works very well. There are other more comprehensive options such as the Alesis IO Dock. This gives you MIDI I/O as well as audio I/O and a bunch of other stuff. Very cool. Even some regular computer interfaces work when hooked up to iPad via the camera connection kit. But these usually must be class compliant (driver free!) and have their own power supply as they can't draw power from the iPad. Lots of options out there now.

Garageband for IOS is THE killer app for the Ipad, imo. The "smart" instruments are just massively entertaining.

Unfortunately, it appears Korg's 50% off sale ended today, else I would recommend IMS-20 as the best synth I've tried (caveat--I work mostly in guitar based music.) It's still worth it at $32, but it was a killer deal at $16.

there isnt many 'full' DAWs, but Nanostudio is probably the closest.

these are a bit more limited but worth a look

beatmaker 2 - MPC style sampling/drum machine
iKaossilator - small phrase looper, great fun.
figure - propellerheads' new 'toy'. very limited, but cheap.
iSequence - kind of like a sideways tracker.

I don't hear a lot of love for Meteor Multitrack, but it's quite an impressive package, imo. I do have about $40 into it and its add ons, but its the most fully capable DAW I've come across on IOS.

I own Nanostudio, but haven't opened it in forever--no audio file support.

Meteor IS impressive, and worth the $50 or $60 or so you'd need to spend to get the MIDI editor, virtual instruments (which sound pretty good, though they could use more presets), and compressor, gate, and EQ plugins. It's got great audio editing, really good import/export capability (via WiFi, DropBox, AudioCopy/Paste) -- BUT it does take some getting used to (I read through the entire manual before spending time with it, and that was a big help).

GarageBand is definitely the killer app and useful beyond just being a sequencer (I use GarageBand guitar/amp sounds in my Meteor projects ).

If you just want to layer up a bunch of loops, I'd check out Studio.HD from SoundTrends. 24 tracks, four effects per track, great import/export functionality.

If you plan on doing any MIDI sequencing (either inside or outside of the box), Genome is essential.

And I like DM1 for Drums. It's a bit fiddly, you can't import your own samples (but you can mix and match from their included kits, which generally sound very good), but it is gorgeous, has a robust sequencer, and is a lot of fun.

BassLine and MoDrum are fun, too (moreso with each other, or with Genome).

But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention iSequence HD. It's a fun little sequencer/tracker app with great sample import/editing abilities. It takes a few minutes to get your head around it at first, but once you do, it's a really quick way to build tracks.

GarageBand is a must buy. Period.
All the products by Korg is really massive.
Skip FL Studio. It isn't worth the money.
Orphion is just a blaze to play with.

Most of the good DAWs and sequencers were mentioned above. Wanted to mention Hokusai which is an audio editor and generally useful tool for audio file management (allows you to export files in 32-bit WAV format).

Also some other nice synths:

Grain Science (Granular synth, also has assignable x/y pads, a huge patch bay of assignables, tons of effects, etc, etc...)

Nlog synth (4-oscillator subtractice synth, 4 enevelopes, 4 LFOs.. a powerhouse in the ios synth world and the developer is always up on the latest advancements)

Sunrizer (sounds amazing!)

Addictive synth (Additive synth, draw your Waveforms and envelopes)

Arctic synth (Simple, stable, good virtual Midi implementation)

TC-11 (Insane! Describing it here might turn into its own separate post, maybe go and read up on it...)

Geo Synth (Really just a great controller, once you get it down you can do incredibly fast runs and arpeggios - especially great when paired with Thumbjam, Arctic synth or SampleWiz for huge pitch-bends, independent pitch-bends within or outside of a polyphony group...)
