I'm using AVG just because it has been on this system since before I got it, but is there a better free solution out there that will give as good protection? Thanks!

I'm on Vista.
What do you think of 'safe search' features in AV programs? I was considering disabling this in AVG, I'm sure it is part of the bloat. It may be a way to trim it down without totally replacing it.
I do use Avast on my laptop and that definitely is an attractive option. I just want to get a nice pooling of advice and decide
Thanks everyone for helping out.

Interesting that this topic came up since I was just thinking about posting something similar.
I've used AVG for years and years and I have always been happy with the protection. In the latest edition however there is no easy way to suspend or exit the program while it is running. You used to be able to do this. One of my DAW machines is constantly connected to the internet and I would like to suspend virus protection occasionally when I need that extra horsepower on a project. Can Avast or other worthwhile candidates be terminated from the taskbar?

Those that can, do. Those that can't, argue about it on k-v-r

If you right click on it there are various options such as disabling it for 10 minutes, or until the computer is restarted.dgkenney wrote: Can Avast or other worthwhile candidates be terminated from the taskbar?

Well I just installed Avast and uninstalled AVG. Unless someone chimes in with something that is significantly better than Avast I think I'm done

Microsoft Security Essentials Ram usage 5MB
Updated every day and it's free.
MSE is updated everyday to combat the latest threats. Many anti virus software companies threatend to sue Microsoft if they include it in Windows 7 so it is an optional download to avoid the courts. I think that says alot about how good the competition thinks of it.

I don't think that is accurate actually, i believe they would have sued even if it were crap, it is another situation like the IE/Netscape thing. It would basically make it hard for anyone to compete. Now it may be great I don't know, but I don't think that is the reason they threatened to sue.Kaboom75 wrote:Microsoft Security Essentials Ram usage 5MB

Well many PC magazines tested MSE and found it removed everything they put in. I was using Zone Alarm, AVG, and Norton many times I had to reinstall windows because of viruses I could not get rid of. MSE has been on my rig for two years and never had any problem with my OS. I also scan with Malwarebytes and that always comes up clear normally malwarebytes would find the viruses that AVG and Zone Alarm missed.
