I really wanted to like this synth... but it is honestly the most disappointing VSTi that I own...

It's not a patch on the real thing. It sounds flat and lifeless to me on my monitors.

It should be powerful for programming complex sounds, but the programming for this is a complete pita and is just off putting.

The filters really don't sound very great to me at all. They seem quite generic and a little bit flat. multiply that by the 8 layers of voices and you get 8 layers of flatness.

I had read somewhere that xils plan to update the interface. Maybe I'll take a look again when that happens...

@Resonator63 there's no real alternative to the xils stuff that doesn't use a dongle.... the sound is very niche and unique, the other big analog synth sounds absolutely nothing like it

I agree that the xils stuff has a niche and their own sound.I'd like a lot of plug-ins that I don't have.I just can't afford them all.
I'd like to get Diva one day and probably Synthix too(preferably without a dongle though)

Are there any 3rd party patch banks that anyone knows of for this and polyKB available anywhere yet?

if not what a shame! hope someone does some extra banks, can never have enough for unique synths like this.

Simon Ball from SoundsDivine has made some nice banks for the XILS-lab synths. He also contributes to the factory banks.

Who's to say... I thought a lot of the sounds were a little flat and wondered if just turning up the cut off might help, but can you just turn up the cut off to alter the sound.... well not easily...

It just doesn't have the presence that things like massive, largo, (diva), even some reaktor ensembles have....

I *really* want it to be a bit better... the real thing has made some of my favourite all time synth sounds...

I've got Synthix (and Xils3) - as a synth in its own right, to my ears it sounds great and different from the others I have.

I particularly like the Arp sequences on it, such as those by LotuZia, but I'm still getting to grips with the programming side of it.

As to whether it emulates the Synthex hardware synth, I can't say as convincingly as those who currently own one (I have only visited a studio a few times where there was one, and that was some years ago).
Imo it's also a fair argument to say that a) software synths will always sound slightly different from hardware because they are not hardware, and b) even hardware Synthexes sound different from each other.


This thread at GearSlutz is quite a good read regarding the subject - not least the comments by LotuZia (half way down page3) about how he and Paul Wiffen (Synthix preset maker, synth legend and the one who introduced Synthex to Jean Michel Jarre) 'finally met ... in Paris, and ... compared the Synthix with an original Synthex we could put our hands on ( Courtesy of Stephane Bonvallet from Spectrasonics ) we were all amazed by how identical the Synthix could sound VS the real Synthex in most cases':

Now, whether it sounds convincing enough for someone versus a real Synthex is clearly a matter of subjective taste.
But for me it is the closest thing I have found that I like to the sound of a Synthex, and also it is considerably cheaper.

Ultimately, Synthix is a cool synth in its own right and I can see it fitting into many of my more 'electronic' music creations.
