just a humble rant.

all this talk about how analog a plugin sounds (or doesn't). what difference does it really make?
isn't the real issue "does this plugin sound good to ME or not?" i mean, who cares if it's diva or a real juno106, or a nexus preset, or...?? not the LISTENER.

music isn't just for other music makers, it's for...everyone else (well, AND the music makers). someone is moved by your music...or they aren't. outside of music-making nerds (i.e. most of us), or computer geeks (again LOL, most of us), no one cares whether it's a drummer or addictive drums, whether the bassline was quantized or not, whether you made your own sounds on a synth plugin or used factory presets.

hey, the discussion is the reason we're on these forums to begin with, and that's all good. but music is ultimately about MUSIC; it's the big picture, and the details are just...details.

now back to our regularly scheduled arguments I MEAN discussions...

The difference is people generally like the sound of analog. Not that hard to understand.

First, music makers are music listeners, too...

But the main reason for the analog-digital-battle is that the analog guys wanna show off with all these expensive hardware synths and effect units and they feel much better stumbling over their Juno 106 even if they can't make good music.

Make a photo from a studio with loads of analog gear, and everyone is impressed. Make a photo from all your digital software synths and effects -- you can't, right??

Good music is good music, bad music is bad music. If I'd make a real groovy song out of free Musicradar samples, nobody would know that. But it would be great music.

Saying "Digital" does not soley imply Software as Digital lives in hardware too

Some of my favorite Hardware synths are DIGITAL

Ever play an old video game system? Those 8-bit sounds were awesome. No seriously, they were. Different sounds for different music.

And honestly, everyone turning Moog filters, etc, into a fetish gets pretty annoying quickly.

I appreciate that most of the sounds originated from analogue sources, e.g the 303, juno, JP etc, and they sound "best" on those formats.

But if I want to use similar in my work, i'm not remotely bothered if it's not 100% accurate to the hardware, provided it sounds good to my ears, i'm not interested in less than 0.2% of people who'll say

"That acid drop isn't a real Roland TB303" or

"That hoover wasn't from a Alpha Juno 2"

If the sound fits, then use it, if it's not 100% an authentic digital recreation of the hardware, then I really couldn't care less. If it fits, it's perfect.

My thoughts exactly. Much better to appreciate the unique qualities and sound of a synth than to worry whether or not it sounds like other gear.

Recently I've found a CD with the inscription "This CD is made with the ORIGINAL REAL Juno hoover sound 'What the...'"

I haven't bought it, because it sounded worse than my vacuum cleaner...
