Hi all,

I just discovered the Art Vista Malmsjö piano - it sounds amazing in the demos - but I know it's very old as sample libraries go (2001) and only has 4 velocity layers per note.

Does anyone have this? Does it still compare well with more recent pianos despite it's age?

I use it all the time. It has it's own sound, so I don't think too much about velocity layers or any of that. I don't notice any shortcomings. It's not going to be a one-size-fits-all piano, so all I care about is that it sounds great for those moodier cues that I do a lot of. I have other pianos for pop or other styles.

I would buy it again, even today.

Thanks Mike, I'm considering it. I've just bought the Imperfect Samples 1908 Steinway Walnut, which also has a very antique warm woody tone, but I think the Malmsjö covers different ground.

I guess lots of velocity layers only come in handy when playing a really dynamic piece anyway...

Probably also worth to check out the White Grand / White Sister ones from Sampletekk.

I've heard that the Sampletekk White Grand is also a Malmsjö, but it sounds very different to me - still very nice, but not what I'm looking for at this stage.

That piano has only pedal down samples. It has a distinctive sound and was quite popular in its day.

Thanks Egbert, that's also really useful as I was thinking of using it with the Imperfect Samples Piano (main volume turned to zero, fx turned up) to get pedal and key sounds with it, but there's no point if it doesn't have pedal up samples. Still could be useful to use as it is though.
