right now; my motherboard only allows 4gb on memory - WIN7 - AMDPhenomII 940 quad - LIVE8 host

seems to work very well for me - but curious about the upgrade path to additional memory with a new mobo

question is : what features / benefits are gained going to 8 or 16gbs ?

Youll need Windows 7 64 bit version for above 4GB. Only benefits are for huge sample sets.

Keep in mind that you will most likely need to upgrade your CPU as well as your motherboard. The Phenom II 940 is an AM2+ processor, and this particular Phenom II isn't forward compatible with AM3 motherboards.

I know, I had the same processor before I upgraded. I was hoping to just get a motherboard with higher memory capabilities, but no go. I had to go motherboard, processor, and memory.

Also, the memory that you have may not be compatible with whatever motherboard you get.

Lots to keep track of.

I occasionally use a 4 bar or 4 bar drum or bassline sample within a project

Usually mix-down several drum instrument instances to a series of drum audio clips i.e. A section : Geist for 8 bars, B section : Geist mixed with uTonic for 16 bars, etc - as audio clips

so far, have not had any difficulty . . .

disappointing Kitty - I thought 2+ was forward compatible with AM3 . . .

I think some were, but the 940 wasn't.

Look it up yourself also just to make sure, but that's what I found when I was looking to upgrade mine.

large sample set means like a kontakt library bigger than 2gb..
i have 8gb and i am happy that i can load large banks.. also it comes into play doing heavy image editing and video work..

Huge would be symphonic libraries plus big Pianos. Trying to recreate an orchestra faithfully would be huge. It wouldnt be worth the trouble for what youre doing.

You should check the latest drivers and bios for your motherboard they might allow you to remove your ram and install larger Ram.

If you max out your ram with a project in your daw the hard drive is used as extra ram which is far slower than having enough ram.

If your Daw or OS hits its own ram limit this is 3.2GB for Ableton Live and 2GB for Win XP then the DAW crashes.

Win 7 64bit home version has a limit of 16GB RAM. 256Gb for the pro version.

I use a sampled guitar track which is 2GB And SSD 4 drums which is around 1.5GB for one track. After i baught these I upgraded my RAM to 12GB and installed Jbridge which allows me to work around Lives 3.2 GB limit.
