I won't question your motivations, only to suggest from my own experience. An e-mu command station makes and excellent compositional sketchpad. You can capture 32 tracks of MIDI, comes with a decent set of sounds, is expandable, and can be had for little money.
Cheers

I'd say a piece of paper would be more useful than that.Grain Bastard wrote: I'd say an iPad is what you want, second hand price out of your price range???

I feel exactly like the OP. After much testing, I now prefer the combination of (1.) an extremely easy-to-use hardware groovebox (a Korg EMX in my case) and (2.) a polyphonic hardware synthesizer with many knobs that offers not just subtractive standards, but also some decent piano and e-piano sounds (in my case that's a cheap but extremely inspiring MicroKorg XL and a Motif XS).
Inspiration strikes as soon as I start a beat at the EMX and start jamming on my MicroKorg...
