Please tell me your experience good or bad using Window 7 Home premium for audio

Well I did it. It was too great a deal to pass up: Athlon Vision Quad core/8GB RAM and 1TB hard drive. I have an M audio soundcard, but I can't install it until I finish a song I'm working on. I guess the 'fun' really begins there. I'm assuming everything I have to re-install should be 64 bit. I'm also assuming licenses you get cover 64 bit versions. There's actually no point in installing software until I get FL 64 bit installed. I'm anxious/terrified at the same time.

Only your hardware's DRIVERS have to be 64bit

you can install 32-bit applications and plugins, however.

I have a folder path for 32bit plugins and a 64 bit path for those.

Windows 7 (64bit) will install 32bit software in a 'Program Files(x86)' folder automatically and 64bit software in the plain 'Program Files' folder


of course you can't start the 64bit version of your host and use 32bit versions of plugins and vice versa.. but you can use all 32bit software and plugins even when operating with windows 7 64-bit.

Tip: diable UAC when installing software. search google for this or here on kvr.

If you install Jbridge http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/ you could use 32bit plugins in a 64bit DAW and 64bit plugins in a 32bit DAW.

I tried this with Win 7 64bit, Ableton live 8.2 and Studio one 2 64bit with Soundtoys plugs, Omnisphere, U-HE plugs, Kontakt, SSD 4, all worked for both DAWS.

And I installed OEM v1. No problems at all.

Literally the only problem I have with it is how incredibly dumbed down I feel when I compare the nuts and bolts know how that was necessary with XP....

I've had no problems except for one curious phenomenon that I haven't heard anyone else discuss. Every so often, the entire GUI for Cubase will disappear from my screen for about a second. The program keeps running, and no settings are altered, but for about a second I will be looking at just my desktop. Then it comes back as if nothing happened.

There's no specific time when this occurs. And sometimes (more often than not, actually) I'll go for some very long sessions without it happening.

BTW, it also happens to the GUI's for plugins within Cubase that I'm working with.

Other than that, no issues other than trying to find x64 versions of all my plugs. Running Cubase 6.5 on a Dell XPS desktop.
